Annalise Goode walked through the halls of the Gallagher Academy For Exceptional Young Women with a slouch. Her whole life she had been a chameleon. She had loved being the girl that no one saw. Now everyone saw her. They all gave her a strange look.
She couldn't really blame them. She was the girl who's grandmother was hunting her to groom her to be a monster. Her grandmother wanted her to be like Regina O'Dare: then woman who pulled sleeping children from their beds and whipped them into killing machines.
She was also the girl who had run away from school and gotten attacked by her grandmothers henchmen last spring. Her grandfather had jumped in front of a bullet for her father. He could have died and it was all her fault.
On top of that, Anna was the girl who had snuck out of school to see a boy. A boy that shattered her heart. She was also the younger sister of an extremely attractive Blackthorne boy named Chase. The boy who only had eyes for 1 girl.
In addition, she was the daughter of Gallagher legends. Her parents, Cameron and Zachary Goode, had taken down the Circle of Cavan as teenagers. They were some of the top agents in the world.
Finally, she was the girl that every rumor was about. It was getting hard even for her to separate fact from fiction.
Rumors that Anna had heard about the summer:
1- Anna had been attacked on multiple occasions throughout the summer (fiction).
2- Bree Morrison had snuck off of her grandfathers farm in Kansas to see Chase (fiction).
3- Chase had used a dead letter drop to make contact with Bree (fiction).
4- Chase had snuck out of the house to see Bree after he had heard that she had been in an accident (fact).
5- Chase actually made it to Bree's farm (fiction).
6- Anna spent all of her time in a high security facility with some of the best agents in the world (fact- her family was full of the best agents).
7- Anna's younger siblings were already highly trained operatives and were better than some of the senior operatives (fiction).
8- Anna's youngest sibling broke her arm by running as fast as she could into Anna's other younger sibling to see if they could switch bodies (fact).
Things were so different now. Anna wondered if they would ever be the same. Her summer was amazing. Her parents took off of work for it. She got to catch up with her younger siblings and spend more time with her older brother, her best friend. The kids were fun. They didn't realize what was going on. Chase was always distracted. Anna knew that he was either worrying about her or thinking about Bree.
There had been a rumor Anna heard that Bree had gotten into a bad accident on her grandfathers farm in Kansas. When she shared the rumor with the family she made sure to say that it may not be true. It didn't matter, Chase snuck out that night to go and see her. But Anna had 2 of the best spies in the world as her parents. Chase never even made it out of the state.
"Anna!" Her best friend Caroline screamed as she walked into the room. Care threw her arms around her and hugged her tightly. Caroline had long, strawberry blonde hair and hazel eyes. "Oh my gosh! I was so worried about you!"
"I missed you too, Care," Anna said with a smile.
"Glad to see you're looking well. I was worried you would have done something stupid like cut your hair," a silhouette said from the doorway. Anna and Caroline turned. Their best friend Diana McHenry was casually leaning against the door. Her black hair and blue eyes searched the room. "Where are the twins? Where's Bree?"
"The twins are seniors, Diana," Anna said with the roll of her eyes and a laugh. The twins were the daughters of Grant and Rebecca Newman. They were gorgeous and fantastic spies. "You know that they're going to be busy. They don't have time to help us sneak out of school anymore. They've got to worry about their future."
"Psh, our future is set in stone," Amelia said as she strolled through the room with her sister.
"We've always got time to help you break the rules. Especially on our last year," Adalind added. "Now where's Bree? We thought for sure this would be the first place she'd come. There's no doubt that she wants to know all of the bloody details about your dreamy brother." Anna suddenly got scared. Adalind was right.
"You don't think the rumor about her accident was true, do you?" Anna said, trying to hide the fear in her voice.
"No, Bree is smart. She's quick. She wouldn't get in an accident," Diana said confidently.
Diana's confidence faded as Bree didn't show up to their suite for the next few hours. They slid down the banister into the grand hall for their welcome back dinner.
"Look at us," Diana laughed. "We're freshman."
Anna wasn't listening. She was scanning the room for the only girl that her brother had ever given more than a second glance to. Anna's eyes locked on the trademark wavy blonde hair that she knew to be Bree's. It was shiny and gorgeous. Bree had natural beach waves that many women would pay money to have.
"Bree?" Anna asked. She knew that it was her friend, yet something was different. Bree slowly turned around. Anna stepped back in shock. Bree had extremely dark circles under her eyes. She looked tired and... sad?
"Hey, angel," Bree managed. She had lost her perky tone. "How was your summer?"
"How was yours? You look awful," Diana said. Bree gave her a sad smile.
"How is he?" Bree asked as her eyes filled with concern. She didn't have to say the name, Anna knew she was talking about Chase.
Anna thought about her answer. All summer Chase had been different. He paced. He constantly looked out the window. Every place they went he scanned everything multiple times. Almost like he was looking for someone. Anna knew that Chase was looking for their grandmother. She was hunting Anna. But she also knew that Chase was looking for Bree. He was worried about her. Protecting her had been one of the only things that he cared about.
"Fine," Anna finally answered. She picked her words carefully. "I think he really misses you." Bree nodded and Anna watched as relief flooded her eyes.
"Women of the Gallagher Academy, who goes here?" Anna's grandmother, Rachel Solomon asked.
"We are sisters of Gillian," all of the girls answered in unison.
"Welcome home. As you know, last year we had the life of some of our students hang in the balance. This was a terrorist attack. The target of this group is my granddaughter, Annalise. The trustees and I have decided that we find it fitting to bring in a bodyguard for Annalise. This young lady is Gallagher Alumni. She has excelled in multiple branches of MI6, CIA, Interpol, Homeland Security, Secret Service, and many more organizations," Rachel began. The doors to the grand hall opened and a woman walked in. She had long black hair and the most beautiful eyes. They were a mix between green and blue. Her eyes were squinty. The woman was gorgeous.
Bree's fork dropped. Anna looked at her and saw her mouth hanging open in shock. "Kira?" Bree whispered. Anna looked back to the woman.
"Please join me in welcoming Agent Kira Shane to the Academy," Anna's grandma finished. Anna watched Kira's eyes. They were locked on her. They drifted, only for a minute, as they locked on Bree.
"Bree?" Anna started slowly. "Do you know this woman?"
Bree slowly shook her head yes. Her voice shook as she whispered, "that's my sister."
