Walking through the Gallagher Academy on that cold winter day I felt invincible. I was Cameron Goode. I was the chameleon. I was a legend.
"Welcome home, Gallagher Girl," Zach said with a grin. Our hands were laced together as we strolled through the halls where we fell in love. "You remember the plan?"
"We're checking out the school, giving lectures, and keeping the kids safe. We see what they know and we bring Bree Morrison to Townsend to be questioned. They didn't shoot her, so she might know something. Preston and Macey are traveling using their covers as congress members and they are searching for moles. Bex and Grant are going to Blackthorne to look for signs of boys being recruited. Matthew and Morgan are traveling the world searching for leads, and Liz and Jonas are here with us," I replied, rattling off every fact of our mission. Zach nodded.
"Good to see you're still sharp," he chuckled. We met Mr. Solomon at the doors to the grand hall. I hugged him.
"Hey, Joe," I said with a smile. He kissed my cheek.
"Welcome home, Cammie," he replied. He and Zach shook hands and Joe patted him on the back.
When my mother began talking Joe pushed open the doors and Zach and I strolled in. I watched everyone gasp. Blackthorne Boys and Gallagher Girls alike. We were legends at both schools. Liz waved ecstatically at us and Jonas gave us the thumbs up.
I noticed the table where my kids were at. They were sitting with Bex's kids too. The twins were smiling at me. Diana winked. I noticed the pretty blonde girl, Bree. She was a friend of Anna's. She was the girl who stepped in between the gun and her friend. She was sitting next to Chase. Her eyes were wide as she looked at us. I watched Chase's gaze. It never left her. I knew that Zach had to be thinking the same thing: those two had it bad for each other.
Chase finally followed her gaze and locked eyes with us. He dropped his fork and it crashed to the ground. Anna whipped her head around and gasped at us. I felt Zach laughed. He was enjoying this little game.
When mom finally finished introducing us we made our way to our kids. I smiled as I said, "hey kiddos."
Zach and I teased the kids for a while. I saw how much Chase cared for Bree. I almost felt bad as we took her to my mother's office to be questioned by Townsend.
"I was questioned by the CIA and Interpol," Bree was saying. "I thought I was done with the interrogations." I felt bad for her. I remembered when that had been me. I looked at her.
"When you're in this line of work the interrogations never end," I replied honestly. She nodded and gave me a bright smile.
"So, who is this agent?" She asked.
"Oh, you'll see," Zach chuckled. She looked at him. Her gaze lingered a few seconds too long. She was no doubt in shock by how much Chase looked like his father.
"Hey," I said to her. She turned and looked at me. "He's kind of grumpy sometimes. He's just old. I promise you he's not as stone cold as he'll make it seem. We'll be with you the whole time. We've got your back."
"Thanks," she said without a trace of sarcasm in her voice. We opened the door to my mother's office and stepped inside. Edward sat at her desk looking like he owned it.
"Hello, Bree," he said with no enthusiasm. "Can I offer you a drink? Have a seat, make yourself comfortable." I knew that not a single word he said was sincere.
"I'm fine, thanks," she said.
"What's your name?" Townsend asked, jumping into the interrogation.
"Bree."
"Full name."
"Bree Evelyn Morrison."
"Any significance to your name?" Townsend asked. I rolled my eyes, thinking it was a stupid question.
"Evelyn was my grandmother's name."
"Living family members?" Edward continued.
"My mom, dad, grandpa, and half sister," she said.
"Names?" I rolled my eyes again. I didn't see how this could be of any importance.
"My mom is Cassie, my dad is Parker, my grandpa is Robert, and my sister is Kira," she said lacking the annoyance in her voice that I felt. Townsend locked eyes with us. We knew the family. I didn't know that her sister was Kira. I assumed it was Kira Shane. She was a stellar agent.
"What happened on the night of the attack on Annalise Goode?" Ed asked. I sat a bit straighter, anxious to hear.
"I went to her room to talk to her and saw that they were all gone. I figured something went wrong, so I ran into town using a secret passage. I saw that they were being attacked, so I fought with them. One attacker pulled a gun and aimed it at Caroline's head. I stepped in front of her. He looked at me and ran the other way," she said as if for the millionth time. I realized that it probably was the millionth time.
"Did you know the attacker?"
"No."
"Ever seen him before?"
"No."
"Why did he run?"
"I don't know."
"Why are you alive?"
"I don't know!" She cried. I heard the stress in her voice. I had been her before. I knew that all she was wondering about was why she was still alive. Townsend huffed.
"Is there anything you Gallagher Girls are good for? Is there anything that you can tell me?" Townsend snapped. I glared at him. I expected Bree to be mad, but she kept her composure.
"I can tell you that you're left handed, but you have calluses showing that you shoot with your right. Your eyes look brown, but those are just contacts. I can tell because you blink too often. I'm guessing your real eye color is blue. Your accent indicates that you're from America, but the way that you said 'know' tells me that you're from England. I see the line on your ring finger, telling me that you're married. Why don't you wear your ring? And the lines on your forehead are telling me that you have children. Two I think, but I'm leaning towards three. I can tell you a lot of things, sir. I just can't tell you why I wasn't killed on that December night," she said calmly. I grinned. Zach nodded his head, clearly impressed. Townsend finally turned to me.
"She's good," he told me.
"Of course she is," I said with a nod. "She's a Gallagher Girl." I watched Bree beam with pride. I knew that it must have meant a lot coming from me.
"But not good enough," Townsend said sharply. I watched her smile fall. "I'm surprised that she didn't realize the family ties. I thought she would, considering she's been spending so much time with Chase."
"What?" She said. I saw the confusion on her face. Townsend grinned. He looked at Zach. Bree followed his gaze.
"That's my dad," Zach said. Bree's eyes widened.
"You're Chase and Anna's grandfather?" She asked. He nodded. "That explains the resemblance and the cocky attitude." We started laughing.
"That will be all, Ms. Morrison. Thank you for your time. And neat trick," he said. I saw a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. She shook his hand and we ushered her out the door.
"How'd I do?" She asked. I smiled. Of course she wanted reassurance.
"You did great. I'll make sure to tell Joe about how well you noticed things," I said. She smiled.
"Just ignore some of the things that he said," Zach said waving away Townsend's harsh tone earlier. Zach grinned. "He's nothing but an old British guy."
We walked her to the elevator that lead to the sublevels. She pressed her hand to the glass. Zach and I put our key cards up to it. The glass flashed green and a door slid open. We climbed on to the elevator.
"So," Zach said with a smirk. "How's Chase?" Bree started laughing.
"Romantic," she said, playing along with Zach's little game. He laughed.
"You're not bad, Bree. Not bad at all," he chuckled. She smiled. We made it to sublevel 1 and entered the Coveops room.
Joe Solomon's voice echoed through the room as he said "right on time."
