Chase Goode had never been a good sleeper. That's what happens when you're a spy. He was also still on Blackthorne's time schedule. The boys usually did night drills. Chase found himself sprinting across the school grounds. He crept through the long hallway full of girl's suites.
Again, Chase wasn't creepy. He opened the door to Bree's suite. He wasn't there to stalk her. She had said she had nightmares and he was only checking up on her. She was so peaceful when she slept, so beautiful. Chase wanted nothing more than for her to be his. Him and Bree had talked about having a relationship a lot, there were just factors standing between them. He watched Bree roll around. She began thrashing.
"No! Caroline look out!" She whimpered. Chase started moving towards her. Tears began rolling down her face. He shook her. She started trying to hit him.
"Bree," he hissed. "It's me, it's Chase. Wake up, Gallagher Girl." Bree bolted awake and started breathing heavy and the tears kept coming. He held her and shushed her, pointing to her roommates. Bree tried to slow her breathing. She was holding onto Chase tightly. He kept his arms wrapped around her. "Come on, let's get out of here."
Chase grabbed Bree's hand and took her to the P&E barn. For some reason it felt like their place. Chase sat down on the mats. Bree sat down across from him. He watched her with concern.
"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked. He could still see the outline on her face of where the tears had been rolling down minutes before.
"It's the same dream every night. It's happened ever since that night," she said as she shivered. Chase nodded. He had heard that Anna had been attacked, he knew it was the work of Catherine. He knew that Amelia broke her arm and Adalind got a concussion. He also knew that the boy Anna had fallen for left her in a way that left her in tears. Besides that, Chase knew nothing.
"What really happened that night?" Chase asked. Bree looked at him like he was supposed to know, and maybe he was. Still, she told him anyways.
"I knew that Anna was going to break up with Cason that night. We were always careful. Adalind and Amelia tailed her while Diana was running the comms. I didn't want to be on comms that night. I stopped listening after a while. I got caught up on my own project. I went to Anna's suite to make sure that she was okay and they were gone. All of them and I just knew. It was just a gut instinct that something was wrong, so I sprinted to the place I thought they would be. I was right and they were being attacked, so I fought along side them. We were doing good. We thought that we were safe. Then the man pulled a gun on Caroline. I didn't even think, I just stepped in front of her. I would take a bullet for any of them. The man just looked at me. Then he turned and ran in the other direction. I don't know why he ran. I don't know why I'm still alive," Bree explained.
Chase was in awe. And just when he thought he couldn't fall for her more. She was brave, that was for sure. "So you dream about it?" He guessed. She nodded. She looked up and met his eyes.
"How did you know? About Cason," she asked. Chase could have lied. He thought she would see right through it, so he said nothing. He couldn't explain without revealing what Blackthorne really was. She would surely leave him if she knew.
"It's classified," he said. He tried to grin at her, but he couldn't hide the sadness.
"Why can't you be honest with me?" She asked. He saw the hurt in her face as she said, "can I even trust you?"
   "No," he stated simply.
   "Why?"
   "Because you're not a fool."
She looked sad. His words were supposed to hurt, just a little. He sighed. There was so much between them.
"Can you tell me anything? Please, just something about you that is true. It's hard for me to decide which part of you is cover and which is real," she said softly. Chase nodded. She deserved that much.
"My family means the world to me. I would do anything for them," he said firmly. She nodded.
"I can't remember the last time that I saw my family," she whispered. Chase jerked his head up and raised an eyebrow.
"My mom works for Interpol, she's always busy. My dad is one of the head directors of the Secret Service. That's why I live with my grandpa. I think he's the only family member that actually cares about me," she explained.
"You're an only child?" Chase guessed.
"No, I used to have a sister," Bree replied sadly.
   "She died?" Chase asked.
"No, she's just a ghost. We used to be best friends. She's my half sister. We have different dads. I did everything with Kira. Then my grandma died and she shut me out. She kind of just disappeared. I haven't seen her in 8 years. I don't know where she is or what she's doing or if she's even alive," Bree explained.
"So when you said you had your own project," Chase began.
"I meant that I was trying to find her," Bree finished for him. "I can't find anything about her. It's like she never existed." Bree looked too sad. Chase wanted to see her bright smile again.
"Why did she leave?" He asked, not able to see why anyone would ever leave Bree.
"Because she didn't want to deal with the pain," Bree said flatly. "She didn't want to be there for me."
"But your parents left too. Why would she leave you alone?" Chase asked. His heart broke for Bree.
"Because I wasn't enough for her," she said, her voice started to crack. "I wasn't enough for my parents either. My grandpa is the only one that thinks I could ever be enough." Bree broke down and started crying.
"Bree," Chase said softly. He started moving towards her.
"Why am I never enough?" She shouted. She wasn't yelling at him. She was yelling at her family even though they couldn't hear. "Why does everyone I care about leave me?"
Chase was heart broken. The pain on her face was almost impossible to watch. He thought that if he looked at her too long he would start crying too. He wrapped his arms around her. "I will do all that I can to never leave you," he murmured. He began stroking her hair as she cried. "I promise."
"Don't make a promise that you can't keep," she said. She sounded broken, like someone had promised the same thing to her and broken it before.
"I'm not. I can't tell you that I'll never leave you because we both know that in this business to promise that is to lie. I said I would do all that I can. That's a promise I can keep," he said.
"Thank you," she whispered. She looked up into his eyes. Chase got lost in her beautiful, bright eyes. He didn't realize what he was doing. He suddenly had no control over his body as he kissed her. He swore he could feel a shock as their lips met. He pulled back and looked at her. Her eyes were wide. He ran his hands through his hair.
"You're welcome," he said as he grinned. He felt his cockiness settle in. Bree rested her head on his shoulder. He was happy to have calmed her down. He just continued to stroke her hair as he felt her breathing slow. She was asleep. He finally let his guard down as he held the girl that he wanted more than anything close. She needed to be protected. A girl like that was rare to find. Once he had her, Chase swore that he would never let her go.
