("Where there is no vision the people cast off restraint." -Proverbs 29:18)
Bree Morrison looped her arm around her friends and the 2 made their way to a private spot. Dallin sat on a bench and Bree took a seat next to him. Bree's head pulsed and her vision blurred as she looked at Dallin. Dallin's face morphed and Bree saw him with a black eye grinning at her. Bree was scared. She shook her head and blinked. The vision was replaced with normal Dallin staring at her. Why had she been afraid? Dallin was her friend. She trusted him with her life.
"So," Dallin started with a wink. "Chase seems... nice." Bree shook her head sadly.
"That's not the loving boy I remember," Bree whispered.
"Then what do you remember?" Dallin asked. He sounded... bitter?
"He was accepting. No matter what. He would accept me for anything I had done. He looked at me like he needed to protect me at all costs. He listened to me, I mean really listened to me. He made me feel like I'm not all alone in the world. You know, one time I said I could be surrounded by a million people and still feel all alone. I never felt that way with him," Bree said, remembering how much she and Chase had cared for each other.
"And he was good in bed?" Dallin said with a devilish grin. Bree slapped his arm.
"Dallin, you know I'm not like that. Waiting until marriage is my highest moral. It's in my religion!" Bree exclaimed. Dallin scoffed and rolled his eyes. Bree frowned.
"You really think your boyfriend is so accepting, huh? Then why don't you tell him everything that happened in Australia?" Dallin tested. Bree's face went pale.
"Don't talk about it!" She hissed. "You have to know that wasn't, well it wasn't... I'm not like that. All those things Catherine had us do, that's not me."
"Then who are you?" Dallin snapped. "Because you seemed pretty content to me."
"I'm-" Bree started. She trailed off. She whispered. "I don't know who I am."
"Come back to Australia with me," Dallin begged.
"I can't," Bree said with a small shake of her head.
"Why not?" Dallin growled. "You came back for him. You left me at camp all alone because you heard that stupid song. You left for him. Looks like he doesn't want you back." Bree felt her eyes well up. "Did he ever even say that he loved you?"
"He didn't have to," Bree said coming to Chase's defense. She had always prayed that he would tell her he loved her. He never had. She was starting to feel like her old self again. "I loved him and that was all that mattered."
"You seem so confident," Dallin scoffed.
"I am," Bree said with a firm nod.
"The why did you use love in that past tense?" Dallin tested. Bree's face fell. He had caught her and she knew it.
"Why are you here?" She asked, realization dawning on her. Her head pounded. Dallin rested a hand on her arm. Bree's vision blurred again as she flashed back to Dallin's hand on her arm. Her skin was bare, she didn't have her Academy sweater. She was freezing. She wasn't safe. She blinked and the vision cleared.
"What's wrong, love?" Dallin asked in his deep Australian accent.
"Dallin I don't feel good," she said. Bree closed her eyes as her head pulsed and her vision changed again.
"Dallin I don't feel good," she had asked. She leaned against the stone wall and put her water on the table.
"What is it, love?" He had asked. Bree blinked.
"I'm so tired," she said weakly. She struggled to keep her eyes awake.
"Love?" Dallin asked.
"I can't stay awake," she said as her eyes drifted.
"It's okay, you're tired. Just go to sleep," Dallin soothed.
Bree blinked and her vision cleared. She was still at the academy and Dallin was looking at her with questioning eyes.
"My head," Bree said as she clutched her head. She felt woozy. She lost her balance and fell. Luckily, Dallin caught her.
"Easy love," he said. He wrapped his arms around her and sat on the ground. She was between his legs. She rested her head on his shoulder.
"What the hell?" Someone said angrily. Bree looked up and gasped. She regained strength and jumped to her feet.
"Chase!" She exclaimed. Chase looked appalled as he looked from Bree to Dallin.
"I was going to apologize for my behavior earlier and see if I could make you feel at home," he explained. He cut his eyes and looked at Bree with a disgusted look on his face. "Looks like you already did."
"Calm down, mate," Dallin began. "It's not what it looks like. Bree was having a bit of a dizzy spell. I was just keeping her upright."
"I'm sure," Chase said sarcastically.
"Truly, these things happen to her a lot. Back at camp it got cold sometimes. Bree practically begged me to hold her while she slept," Dallin said with a chuckle. Dallin's eyes were teasing. Chase looked sick.
"I'm leaving," Chase announced.
"What's the matter? Bree and I did a lot at camp. It's nothing to hold us to," Dallin said with a wink. "She just needed someone to comfort her and hold her. I'm a bit of a cuddler myself." Chase stormed out the door.
"Chase, wait!" Bree called after him. She scolded herself as she ran down the hall towards him. She shouldn't care. Chase didn't care anymore. Whatever they had was over. She had lost Chase forever. "Chase!" She finally caught up with him. Her face fell as she saw that pain on his. "What's wrong?"
"Everything's wrong!" Chase exclaimed as he spun on his heels. Bree wanted to hug him tightly. She had never seen him so upset.
"Tell me," she said softly. Chase opened his mouth to speak, but stopped short. He put a finger to his lips. Bree cocked an eyebrow, but said nothing.
"Bree, please be quiet. I don't want your new boyfriend to hear," Chase said. Bree frowned, but didn't protest. She stayed quiet like Chase asked her to.
"Bree!" Chase exclaimed. Bree jumped.
"What?" She asked. Chase huffed.
"I asked you to be quiet."
"I didn't say anything!"
"You were rambling on an on!"
"I didn't say a word!" Bree protested. Chase looked at her like she was crazy.
"Bree," he said cautiously. "You were rambling. You said it was down the hall and that I was taking you the wrong way. You were talking about how tired you were. Over and over you said I was going the wrong way."
"Chase I really didn't say anything," Bree argued.
"Yes," Chase said slowly. He looked scared. "You did."
