("Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." -Joshua 1:9)
Zach and I were 90% sure that this mission was going to be a breeze. We really thought that we were going to go in and go out. As you can imagine, it didn't turn out that way.
We left Riley and Jaycee with Macey. I was extremely grateful that she agreed to watch them. It was always better when the kids could be watched by someone they knew and trusted.
We took a jet out to Gallagher. We were going to pick up the kids and fly out to the ocean where Zach had a boat organized to take us to the small island. I couldn't decide if I was happy or mad that the kids would have to come with us. On one hand, I loved them and missed them and this could be a great experience for them. On the other hand, it involved me pulling them out of school for something related to Catherine. There was a chance that there could be danger.
When we got to the school Phil let us in without trouble. My mom met us at the front and lead us through the school to her office. Solomon was already in there, so I gave him a hug.
"Are they in class?" I asked Solomon. He shook his head no.
"They should be on break. We sent Liz to go get them," he replied.
We waited patiently until finally the door to my mothers office opened.
"Mom! Dad!" Anna cried. She ran to us and we scooped her up in our arms. Chase followed closely behind.
"What are you doing here?" Anna asked.
"We've got a mission," Zach replied with a smirk. "And you two are coming with." Anna squealed and high fived Chase.
"What is it?" chase asked.
"We're going to retrieve your grandpa Morgan's journal from an island. Catherine used your handprints to seal a vault. This journal could be huge for us. We've never heard any stories about Catherine's past. There's a lot we still don't know," I replied.
"When do we leave?" Anna asked.
"As soon as you pack your bags," Zach answered. Anna squealed again. I was glad that mom had agreed to this. The kids only had a week left of school before summer break. I knew mom could have told us to just wait until they were finished with class, but she didn't.
"I'm not going," Chase said cooly. Anna looked at him like he was crazy. Zach cocked and eyebrow. "I'm not leaving Bree."
"Chase she's with aunt Morgan. She'll be fine," Anna whined. Chase shook his head.
"She needs me. I'm not leaving unless she comes," Chase said, standing his ground. I sighed and looked at Zach. He shrugged.
"I guess Morgan could use the day off," Zach gave in. Chase uttered a thank you and then the kids ran to go pack their bags.
Riding in the jet was weird. Zach flew and Chase copiloted. All things considered, Bree looked good. Anna told me that she hadn't been for a while. Morgan insisted that she come and argued for a good while before Zach finally convinced her to take the day off. Anna sat in between me and Bree in the back of the jet.
I was honestly really happy when we got on the boat and Zach started taking us to the island. Zach drove the boat really fast. Chase grinned like it was the coolest thing ever. I knew that he had been trained to drive the same way. Anna held on for dear life. Bree just sat as her long locks flew behind her in the wind. I knew that she had grown up since Catherine's attack. She was more mature.
The clouds overhead were gray and looked very low. The wind picked up and I choked as a strand of my hair flew into my mouth. There was a time when I would have been very embarrassed for Zach to witness that. Now, he just looked at me and laughed.
"Zach?" I said cautiously. "Is it going to storm?"
"Looks like it," came his calm reply.
"That looks bad. Look at the waves," Chase said. I looked out and realized that they were growing huge. Zach shrugged it off and sped up the top of huge wave and we flew over the top and crashed down hard. Water sprayed me and I glared at Zach.
"Dad, I don't feel so good," Anna said weakly. I turned and gasped. Her normally pale face was looking extremely white. Her eyes were drooping.
"Zach, slow down!" I scolded. Zach looked back at Anna and slowed the pace.
"I don't think we have any medicine. What do you want me to do?" Zach asked her.
"I'm fine. Maybe I should just stand up," Anna said weakly. I watched her stand and gasped as she lost consciousness and fell into the water.
"Anna!" I screamed as I watched a wave crash over her. Zach's eyes were huge as he tried to stop. Chase whipped around. I heard a splash and saw black converse going under the water. Bree was going in to save my daughter. I saw her emerge out of the water and swim at an incredible speed towards Anna. I watched in panic.
"Can she really save her?" Zach asked sounding scared.
"She's a lifeguard," Chase said. Zach looked ready to throw up.
"Yeah, in a pool not the ocean!" He cried.
I watched in terror as I saw Anna slip under the water. Her curls sunk under. Bree did a surface dive and came up on her back with her arms wrapped under Anna's shoulders.
"Bree look out!" I screamed as an enormous wave crashed down over her. I held my breath as I searched the surface waiting for her to come up. Finally, she came up and swam to the edge of the boat. She lifted Anna's arms and Zach and I pulled up her unconscious body. I watched Chase pull Bree out of the water. She was panting. Her wavy hair was matted down. She shivered from the cold and ran over to Anna.
"Anna?" She yelled as she shook Anna's shoulder. She got her head low and put her fingers on Anna's neck. She looked panicked as she yelled "she has no pulse. She's not breathing!"
Bree tipped Anna's head back and pinched her nose. She put her mouth to Anna's and breathed air into her lungs twice. Without hesitation she laced her fingers and started compressions on Anna's chest. With her first 2 I heard a snap. Part of me thought she would stop, but then I remembered that Bree was a lifeguard and Gallagher Girl. She knew that the sternum usually snaps when giving CPR.
Bree gave her CPR for what felt like hours. "Come on Anna! Get up!" She screamed as she pushed on her chest.
Finally, Anna coughed and water flew out of her mouth. Bree turned her onto her side as Anna coughed everything out. Anna looked up at Bree weakly and softly said "thanks, Breezy."
I gasped a sigh of relief and hugged my daughter. I hadn't realized that I was crying. Bree smiled and lay down on the deck. She was breathing hard and she was extremely tired. Chase wrapped a towel around her, trying to warm her.
"The lifeguard thing makes sense now," Zach said. "You're a beast." Bree laughed weakly.
We finally made it to the island. Bree and Anna were both incredibly weak. I knew we needed to make our trip as fast as possible.
I followed the coordinates that Tamari had given me until we were there. "This is it," I said. I looked at the arching stone rocks. Sure enough, 2 handprints the size of Chase and Anna's hands were on the stone. Anna took a deep breath and turned to her brother.
"Ready?" She asked him.
"Let's do this," he replied. They each put their hand up and I held my breath as a laser scanned their handprints. A door slid open revealing a small room. I looked around.
"What the hell?" Zach said. "There's nothing here." I furrowed my brow as my phone rang. I picked it up.
"Tamari you've got a lot of explaining to do," I started. I was cut off by the sound of a crying woman.
"I'm so sorry Cammie! I had to! She said she'd kill me if I didn't get you and your family to go. Please forgive me! And may luck be on your side," she cried. I froze as the line went dead. I looked up with terrified eyes. Zach looked at me questioningly. I closed my eyes and heard the faint sound of something ticking. A bomb. I looked up and screamed "run! It's a trap!"
