Chapter 53: The Ball

Zachary Goode was grinning as he put on a suit. The Gallagher Academy was having the annual ball that they had whenever the Blackthorne boys were around. He tied his bow tie and turned to his wife.
"Gallagher Girl!" He exclaimed. Cammie was wearing a royal blue dress. It had a diamond belt and a slit. It hung low on her chest. She looked gorgeous.
"Don't even start," she said with a laugh. She hated getting all dressed up. Zach just grinned. He offered his arm and she took it. They strolled into the grand hall. Boys and girls alike dropped their mouths. Zach knew that the boys were drooling for Cammie, he didn't know how someone couldn't. Zach scanned the room for his father. He was leaning against the wall. He was calm and collected as usual.
"Chase!" Zach called as he saw his son. He and Chase looked like twins in their suits. Chase strolled over to him. "How ya doin, buddy?"
"It's a step up from yellow jumpsuits," Chase laughed. Zach noticed that Chase's focus wasn't on him. He was scanning the room for something. Someone. Bree. His eyes lit up as he saw her. Zach turned. She was in a short white dress with diamonds on the bust line. She looked angelic. Her long, wavy blond hair was cascading down her back. She had two French braids tied back. "I'm sorry, I've got to go." Chase was stammering. His mouth was open and his eyes were wide.
"Wipe the drool off of your upper lip, Romeo," Zach called after him. Chase flashed him a quick grin and followed Bree.
Zach turned and saw his daughter enter the room. She wore a green dress. It was a deep shade of green like his eyes. It was Anna's favorite color. It made her blue eyes pop. Her curly brown hair had been twisted into a fancy updo. She looked so pure. She was gorgeous.
  "How did we get such good looking children?" Cammie asked, grabbing his hand.
  "Look at the 2 of us," Zach laughed. "They've got good genes." Cammie grasped his arm tightly. She was nervous. For what, he had no idea. "You okay, Gallagher Girl."
  "Ya," she said with a smile. "I just don't feel very well." Zach looked to see if she was lying. She didn't look like she was. He felt her forehead.
"You don't feel hot, you only look hot," he said with a wink. She rolled her eyes. He thought it was pretty smooth. "Dance with me." He lead her onto the dance floor. He twirled her as she laughed.
"Papa Ed, come dance with me!" He heard Anna cry. He looked over, expecting his father to reject the offer. He was too serious to let loose, even for a little bit. He shook his head and Anna grabbed his arm and pulled him onto the floor. Zach saw his father smile slightly. He had the biggest soft spot for Annalise.
"Why isn't Chase dancing with Bree?" Cammie asked him. "He's obviously obsessed with her." Zach turned Cammie so he could see. Chase was dancing with Rachel.
"Oh come on, Gallagher Girl. You remember how I was when we were this age. I danced with every girl before I danced with you. The Goode men have got to play hard to get," he laughed. A look crossed Cammie's face, he knew she was remembering.
Zach watched throughout the night. Chase had only danced with Rachel, Cammie, and Anna. He knew that Chase was undercover, all of them were. He wasn't acting it very well since he was only dancing with family members. Still, Zach couldn't be mad. The smile on the ladies faces made it all worth it. Cammie was laughing the whole time Chase spun her around the dance floor.
Zach noticed Chase in a conversation with the DJ. The music was lame. (Never let Jonas be a DJ!) Jonas nodded and Chase smiled at him. Chase turned and strolled off. Jonas changed the song.
"Why are they playing this song?" Cammie asked in confusion. "Is this Winds of Change by the Scorpions?"
"Yeah," Zach replied. "It's Mr. Roth's favorite song." Zach noticed Chase walking towards him. He thought Chase was going to speak to him, but he turned to the girl standing near him at the last second.
"Excuse me, miss Tames?" He heard Chase say to Bree. Bree was undercover as Quinn Tames, a successful politician. "I believe you owe me a dance. I went to a lot of trouble to get them to play our song."
  Their song? Zach shrugged, he'd used a similar line on Cammie. He saw the grin cross Bree's face. She wasn't her legend as she said "careful now, Mr. Rafael. You might just fall in love with me."
"Oh?" Chase questioned. "You're the famous Quinn. I believe I already have." He pulled Bree to the dance floor and held her close. Closer than he'd held his family members. Zach watched as his son smiled, happier than he had ever been before.
"He finally did it," Cammie said. "He learned to care for someone that isn't a part of the family." Zach shook his head.
"I've seen the way that Bree is with Anna and Chase. She IS family," he countered. Cammie nodded in agreement. They both watched as the song ended and Chase dipped Anna.
"I'm almost expecting him to kiss her like you did to me," Cammie said with a playful elbow. Zach shook his head again.
"Chase might have learned to care for someone, but that doesn't mean he'll let them in. He's afraid of letting people get close to him. Can you really blame him? He's seen things. He's done things," Zach reminded her. Zach and Cam eased closer to Bree and Chase. She was still dipped and they were staring into each other's eyes.
"You love me?" Bree asked. Her bright blueish green eyes bore into Chase's deep green ones. Bree wasn't her legend. Chase was.
"Sorry, Quinn, Wesley doesn't fall for anyone," he whispered. Bree frowned.
"Chase," she started.
"Quinn," he said firmly. She sighed and pulled away from him.
"Thank you for the dance, it was lovely," Bree said politely. Zach watched as Chase kissed her hand. He watched a look of shock cross Bree's eyes. Zachary was one of the best operatives there was. He noticed the way that Bree clenched her fist once Chase let go of her hand. He grinned. That was one hell of a brush pass.
