UNDERESTIMATE A WITCHThey didn't make it to the ship.
The girls were sprinting across the dock when they were intercepted by three large flying eagles that Nadia immediately identified as Roman. The three Romans that dropped from piloting the massive birds all were decked in golden armour with a sword and a shield each. They stood in a line, but the one in the middle was significantly scrawnier than his company.
"Surrender to Rome!" Octavian shrieked at them.
Nadia arched a daring eyebrow at the boy. She remembered the myth of her half-sister Circe who would turn the men who threatened her into pigs. Nadia thought that Octavian would suit being a pig. Circe would only transform people into what their true identity was, so Nadia was certain that Octavian would become one if she was tempted to try.
"No thank you." Nadia answered for them, flickering her fingers with red crackling magic as Annabeth unsheathed her dagger and Hazel withdrew her calvary sword.
But Piper saw how the tension was growing and chose to calm the situation. "Octavian," She raised her hands in a diplomatic gesture. "What happened at camp was a setup. We can explain."
"Can't hear you!" Octavian shrieked again. "Wax in our ears - standard procedure when battling evil sirens. Now throw down your weapons and turn around slowly so I can bind your hands." He glared at Nadia's bubbling hands shrilly.
"We should hide our weapons." Hazel muttered to Nadia.
"He should hide that big-ass forehead." Nadia whispered back. Hazel snickered quietly and Octavian glared between the doppelgänger girls.
Yet, as much as Nadia wanted to blast the smirk off of Octavian's face, she waited for Annabeth's call. The daughter of Athena's expression was thoughtful and calculating and Nadia knew she had a plan brewing. Nadia kept her eyes on her, waiting for Annabeth's order to give Octavian an aneurysm.
"Well?" Octavian demanded.
Nadia chewed her lip, trying to stifle her growing magic that wanted to surge out with her agitation. Annabeth had a different plan though. Nadia read her mind sharply and reduced her magic back into her as a peaceful gesture as Annabeth tossed her dagger into the water off the deck of the harbour.
Octavian made a squeaking sound like one of those teddy bears he wore around his waist. "What was that for? I didn't say toss it! That could've been evidence. Or spoils of war!" Gods, Nadia would give him spoils of war.
Annabeth instead gave a dim smile at Octavian for an answer. It was a clever smile that Nadia had used many times to get out of trouble with her dad. The I'm sorry I didn't realise smile that was foolproof. And Octavian fell for it beautifully.
