0021. | CAUGHT BETWEEN
FREEZING AND BURNING

Wild animals were always kind to Nadia. It was something about being a daughter of Hecate that she recently found out from Lou Ellen that made her a subject of respect for wild animals. Like how she used to play with snakes in the garden and when her father freaked out that they were hurting her, they scattered back into the long grass.

But these wild wolves weren't the same and she could tell. Their energies were something sinister and that didn't sit right with her. And as weak as she was then sat in Leo's arms, she knew she wouldn't be much help to them.

"Wolves." Piper murmured. "They sound close." Leo's arms tightened around her in worry. He was scared.

Jason rose and summoned his glistening sword. Coach Hedge joined him with his club and Leo slipped her off of his lap to stand by them. Nadia tried to stand but she couldn't. The pain in her abdomen too much to bear. She knew Jason had sealed it from infection but the muscles inside her were still torn and burned like she had cramps. It was a dangerous pain, like something more than muscle was broken inside her.

"Stay there." Leo warned her and Piper who apparently couldn't stand either.

"We'll protect you." Jason promised and Nadia wanted to retort that she could protect herself but she really couldn't so she nodded and sat by Piper. If anything happened she was ready to give all her remaining energy into saving her best friend.

Nadia flinched when she saw a pair of red eyes watching them from the shadows. She grabbed Piper's hand tightly as Piper grabbed her knife in her free hand. Nadia felt her whip crawling around her hand, ready to be used but she knew she wouldn't have the strength to do it.

More wolves joined the red eyed one and they stepped out of the shadow as leering massive wolves the sizes of Great Danes and nearly as tall as Nadia. The red eyed wolf growled at Jason, stepping forward as the leader of the pack. Piper struggled to her feet and picked Nadia up beside her. They leant on each other worryingly, keeping to the back. They knew they were the weakest of their group.

Jason stepped ahead and spoke something in Latin to the red eyed wolf. It growled something to its lieutenant and stalked off, leaving the pack to watch them. "Dude, I gotta study Latin." Leo ran a hand through his curls. "What'd you say, Jason?"

Coach Hedge looked unsteady. "Whatever it was, it wasn't enough. Look." The wolves circled them, forming a semi-circle that blocked them into their cave. Coach hefted his club into his hand. "Here's the plan. I'll kill them all and you guys escape."

"Coach, they'll rip you apart." Piper argued.

"Nah, I'm good." Nadia really didn't think he was. She was really really scared knowing she couldn't defend herself. It seemed Leo knew that too as he kept glancing back at her and Piper.
