0009. | HER REASON FOR
PRETENDING TO BE FINE

Piper stared in horror as Nadia shrieked and writhed on the floor. Her fingers and palms were grazed and bleeding and her eyes flickered and flashed between brown and gold. Piper's heart hammered in her chest but she couldn't do anything to help. Piper had never so useless as a hero.

Jason went to get off of Tempest and help her but Piper's mind was filled with the memory of Gaea blasting him with Nadia's magic. "Jason, don't!" She cried and her magic flushed over him, making him back off from their friend.

"What's happening to her?" Percy demanded but kept his distance after Piper's charm-spoken warning.

Suddenly Nadia's screaming stopped.

Piper cried in horror when she saw Nadia get to her feet. Her eyes were glazed over in gold with tear covered cheeks and blood stained hands. Blackjack and Tempest reared backwards away from her but Piper couldn't move. She was horrified. But Jason was furious. "Gaea, get out of her!" He commanded strongly. Piper couldn't believe he could speak so bravely, she was sure if she spoke, she'd cry.

"Such bravado, Jason Grace." Gaea spoke through Nadia's voice but it was old and gravelly as if she smoked three packs of cigarettes before speaking. "But the other one, Percy Jackson, also has appeal." Gaea's golden stare was completely unnerving coming from Nadia's gentle face. "Choose, Piper McLean, or I will." Nadia's fingers sparked up, the red magic dancing between her fingers in threat.

"You're insane!" Piper fought. "Leave my friend alone! I'm not choosing anyone for you!"

Gaea raised Nadia's brow in challenge. Suddenly Jason sat bolt right up on his saddle. He stared at Nadia like he was waiting for an order.

"Jason?" She whimpered. "What's wrong-?" She stammered as soon as he looked down at her. Jason's sky blue eyes that used to crackle with glimpses of lightning now were solid gold just like Nadia's. She stumbled back away from him. "Percy, help!" She begged but Percy was the same as Jason.

Percy guided Blackjack back thirty feet away from Jason and Nadia stood between the two mounted demigods. Her smug crying face made Piper's blood boil. "One will die." Percy pointed the tip of his Celestial Bronze sword at Jason.

"I will choose." Jason decided, facing Percy with his own sword raised but they didn't move. They were waiting for Gaea's order.

"Choose, Piper McLe-," Nadia's head wrenched around, her neck craning as her expression tore between stoic and pained. "Stop them-! Silence!" Gaea and Nadia's voices mixed as they spilled from Nadia's mouth. "Do as I say, daughter of Aphrodite, or your friends will pay."
