"That's a Water Tribe weapon!" Sokka cried, taking the weapon from Aang's hand. "That means-" your friends started to search the island, trying to find who the weapon belonged to. "That's a burned..." you trailed off, holding the arrow. "Look! That ship was in dad's fleet!" Katara pointed to a boat, which was docked against the sandy shore."Bato?" Katara jumped onto the man who had just appeared from the shadows. "Bato! Sokka, it's Bato! Dad's friend!" you watched on in mild amusement as the three reunited. It hurt your heart, but you couldn't hold back the chuckle at how happy Katara seemed. Bato explained that he was injured and that the rest of his fleet had left him, at his request.
Bato led you all to his home, and you visibly recoiled at the animal pelts. "Not all of us live in luxury, princess." Sokka remarked. "You really wanna say that? You really wanna say that? I ran, Sokka. So fuck off and stop reminding me of the Fire Nation before I get mad." your children must've sensed your mood spike, because they started to cry.
You raised your middle finger to Sokka, going to the other side of the room to try and stop your babies from crying. "Shh, shh. It'll be okay. I just fed you. Do you want to be carried?" you put your scarf down, wrapping it around your waist. "Sorry, everyone. I know how annoying kids crying can be. It's okay, it's okay." you rocked your children, joining them back in their circle.
"Sokka said you're a princess, and you mentioned the Fire Nation." his eyes gleamed, and you set Zuko and Azula down on the pelt. "The missing Princess Y/N, of the Fire Nation?" you grabbed a dagger from the wall, pressing it against his neck.
"Tell anyone, and it'll be your head that's on the Fire Lord's dinner plate. I won't hesitate to kill you." you hissed, digging the knife in deeper. "Y/N, what are you doing?!? Bato isn't like that!" Katara insisted, and you let go of the man's neck, straightening yourself out.
"This is not a threat, it's a promise. My father and my husband will never get their hands on my children, and I'll make sure of that. I've been taken back once, I refuse to let it happen again." you placed the dagger back on the wall, sitting down next to Zuko and Azula.
"You have very beautiful children. What are their names?" your fingers splayed out across your babies' stomachs, pressing on them to make them giggle. "Zuko and Azula, after my siblings." you cooed at your babies, your heart melting at their reactions.
"May I hold one of them?"
"Alright." you picked up Zuko, placing him onto Bato's awaiting arms. "His name is Zuko." Bato glanced from you and your son, trying to connect dots. "He doesn't look like you as much. More like the father, perhaps?" you stiffened. "No. That baby has my blood and my blood only running through his veins. Same with Azula. They have no father." your voice was sharp enough to cut through glass.
"Lay off him, Y/N."
"Then lay off me, Sokka."
"You did threaten to kill Bato, Y/N." Aang chimed in, an amused lilt to his tone. "Last time I threatened someone it didn't leave the desired message. That old man still turned us into the Fire Nation, and Zhao ended up getting me again. Because of that, there are now more people after me, since I escaped a second time. You can never be too careful. Bato," you made eye contact with the man in question. "I don't regret threatening you. Make no mistake, If I have to, I will kill you. Being close to Sokka and Katara be damned. It'll be your blood I'm cleaning off my hands."
"Y/N, stop! Don't threaten him!" you grinned. "You're right. I don't have to. You should already know from my title that I'm a powerful firebender. But go on, share stories. I think I might go take a walk with Zuko and Azula. Give me back my son, Bato." you took Zuko back from him, leaving his home and finding the shoreline again.
"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry, Bato. I just can't let anything happen to you two. Yeah, you! That's you!" you sat down in the sand, dirtying your clothes. "Once upon a time, there was a red horse. The red horse was very greedy, and he wanted the blue horse's garden." you made a horse out of water, and a horse out of fire.
"You see, my loves? The red horse wanted the blue horse's garden, but when the blue horse said no, he was very mad. So the red horse decided to steal from the blue horse's garden. When the blue horse found out, he was very angry. The blue horse and the red horse fought for the garden, and the blue horse won. The red horse was so mad that he stole from everyone else's gardens. When everyone got tired of it, they teamed up and stopped the red horse from stealing. And then everyone lived happily ever after, even the red horse. Of course, he was punished. But the worst punishment of all is the guilt the red horse felt. The end."
You heard clapping, and you whirled around to see Bato. "Bato! What do you want?" he came to sit back down next to you, seeing your children cooing in your arms. "That was a wonderful story. Is that about the war?" you smiled, looking off into the horizon. "It is. I used to tell it as a way to simplify the war to the children back in Kyoshi. Now, I want my own children to hear the story."
"I'm sorry for threatening you earlier. I just can't have anyone bring me back, especially since Zuko and Azula have been born. It's different, because they can be used as a bargaining chip now." you stared at the now sleeping children in your arms. "I understand. I would do the same, especially in your situation. Although, the knife to my throat was pretty scary." you laughed at his joke.
"Sorry. It was the first thing I saw, and bending would be sure to cause harm. Before you ask, I'm not the Avatar or anything, I just had a lot of spare time." he patted your shoulder. "Alright. I must get back to Katara and Sokka now, but it was nice to understand your side of the story a little more." you saluted him as he walked off.
You watched on in mild boredom as Katara and Sokka scolded Aang for something. Aang finally snapped, defending himself, and you couldn't hold back your whistle. "Go Aang! You got this!" you cupped your hands over your mouth. "Now isn't the time, Y/N!" you held your hands up, a joking smile still on your face. "Alright, alright. Sorry for trying to add humor to the situation."
