"Sokka, please. Aang's a child, he should be having fun. So are you. You have downtime, you should enjoy yourselves." you removed Sokka's finger from Aang's flute. "Katara, it's your turn to pick vacation plans!"
"Oh. Well, this place is nice!"
"Maybe it's changed since the last time I was here?" you grabbed Toph's hand, smiling at her. "I don't need to be dragged around like some child. I can see myself." you laughed, throwing an arm around her. "I know, but I still like to hug you. You're independent, but let me have my moment." she groaned, but let you hug her anyway.
"Woah, woah, woah. Aang isn't a relic, he's a person. Now, get that shit off his head before I make you." you threatened, and the professor nervously removed his tweezers from your friend's head.
"Sokka, you know, I am Fire Nation." you rocked your children, glancing suspiciously at the doorway. "Yeah, but do you have any maps on the Fire Nation?" he has you there. "No, let's do that library thing."
"There it is!" you didn't bother to look, knowing that Toph was blind and that she was messing around with your friends. You laughed when they turned around. "That's what it'll sound like when one of you spots it." she waved her hand in front of her face, and more laughter escaped from your lips. "Holy shit, Toph. You guys are idiots.""Guys, that is the library." you turned to Toph. "Toph, don't get hurt. I'm not saying that because you're blind, but because you're young. Okay? Okay." you slid down the rope, praying that it wouldn't break.
"Wait! Sir Wan Shi Tong!" you tried to grab his attention just as he was about to fly off. "What is it, mortal?" his voice was condescending, but you ignored it as you pulled out a scroll. "I know I gave you another scroll, but I have questions about this one!" you showed him the scroll, which was your native lettering translated into the language here.
"Can I talk with you sir, please? I need to know more about this!" he nodded. "Come. Walk with me, mortal." he started to trudge through the aisles, and you matched his pace. He led you into a study, and you sat down, spreading the scroll out so he could see it better. "What do you need to know about this?"
"I used to write like this, when I was younger. Well, actually. I need to give you context. Is that alright?" he gestured for you to continue, and you told him your story. "Ah. I am not familiar with this type of writing. From what I understand, you claim to be from another world, yes?" you frantically nodded. "Yes, sir. I am, and I've been trying to get back home for years."
"You're not lying. That's odd. I know that other worlds exist, but I don't know anything about your world. That won't do." he clicked his tongue, and a fox came trotting up to you, an empty scroll and a pen. "Write everything you know about your world." you started to scribble it down. Fifty states, America, multiple languages, multiple writing forms.
"Sir, do you want my translation scroll? Of my language to yours. I'd be happy to give it to you, but I'd like to make a copy first." he nodded, and you kept writing everything you knew about your homeworld. It was a jumbled mess, but it would do. If Wan Shi Tong asked, you would make it neater.
My country back home is called America. There are different parts, which we call states. There are fifty states, but I can't remember the names. There are different languages back home, with all different forms of writing them. We have technology. Like phones. Phones can be used to send letters in the blink of an eye. They're little boxes, and you can talk to someone using that screen. We call it 'texting' and 'calling'. We have planes, too. They're like flying bison, but machines. We have many forms of landmasses we call continents. They're not connected, they're like massive islands. There are islands, too. And there are hundreds of countries in the continents.
"Sorry, sir. That's all I can remember. The last time I was home was when I was six." he nodded, letting the scroll dry as a fox brought you another one. "Copy what you must. Then hand the scroll over to me." you started to copy your translations. "Thank you so much, sir. Do you want me to make a neater version of the information on my home world?" he shook his head.
"May I ask you a question, sir?" you asked as you continued to write. He grunted, and you took that as a yes. "Could you tell me about the Fire Nation? I know that there's probably a wing dedicated to my country, but I believe that I would learn it better if you told me. You don't have to, though! I understand that you're a busy-"
He chuckled, and you were floored. He's so condescending normally. Does he like me now? That's weird. "Of course, mortal. You have proved to me that you hold no evil in your heart, and that you want knowledge just for knowledge." he started to recount the history of the Fire Nation, and you jotted things down on yet another blank scroll that a fox had brought you.
He paused in the middle of a story he was telling you. "Sir, is everything alright?" he tucked you under his wing, making you sneeze. "Hold on, mortal." you rolled your eyes, but complied anyway, making sure that Zuko and Azula were safe. He took off flying, and you had to stifle your gasp when you saw where Wan Shi Tong was taking you.
"The Fire Nation is going down!" the owl set you down, starting to speak to your friends. "Mortals are so predictable." he boomed, and you started to panic. "Decent mortal," he addressed you. "run. Escape before I bring this place down." they'll be okay. Just get Zuko and Azula out. Luckily, I got my scrolls. You started to run, snagging a few books here and there.
The walls shook, and sand started to fill the corners of the library. "Guys! Guys!" no response. Oh, no. Should I go back? You can't! Just wait here, and if your friends need help, you'll help them. You waited by the rope, trying to see where your friends were. You caught sight of your friends, and your shoulders untensed. "Run!" Katara commanded, and you saw what was chasing them. It was Wan Shi Tong, but he looked...feral.
"Thank you so much for the history of the Fire Nation, sir!" you scrambled up the rope, not wanting the owl to harm Zuko or Azula. Wan Shi Tong just flew past you, intent on grabbing your friends.
"Toph? Toph, why are you- oh." Appa was gone, leaving behind a guilty Toph. "Toph, it's okay." you scooped the younger girl into a hug, grabbing Aang and pulling him into the embrace, too.
"We'll bring Appa back. I promise."
