CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO

"Haru!" you shouted, throwing yourself into his arms. "I missed you! God, I missed you." he hugged you back, wrapping his arms around you. "You made it out? I thought Zhao captured you!" tears sprung to your eyes. "Zhao is dead. Zhao's been dead for months. Zuko and Azula are safe."

"Can I... see them?" you tugged on his wrist, leading him to a flat rock, where your sleeping children lay. "They're happy and healthy. I just don't know how I'll protect them throughout the invasion." Haru picked up Azula, who had just started to open her eyes. "This is Haru, my love. He's your..."

"Father. I told you that I'd help you with them, no matter what."

"You can't do that. You might look older," you touched his moustache. "but you're not." tears escaped your eyes, and you hurriedly wiped them away with your sleeve. "I know, but I want to help. You helped me take my village back, and I want to repay you."

"That makes it worse." you turned your head, looking away from him. "You cannot get close to my children to repay me. That's wrong, Haru. You should know that."

"That's not what I meant-"

"Of course it isn't. What's next? You want to get married because I helped your mom with those Fire Nation soldiers? My children deserve a stable relationship, I won't allow a person to get close only to leave when they feel that they've done enough." he choked on his spit, floored by your words.

"I wouldn't do that! You know me, you know that I wouldn't do that!"

"I don't fucking know you! Look at me, I still wear my wedding ring! I want something for myself, too! I want a relationship, just something- platonic! I don't want to get married to someone who my children don't see as their father! Fuck, you don't get to do this!"

"Y/N, I-"

"No. I'm tired of being led on by everyone. Tell me what you want. You just want to repay me for helping your village, right? If that's it, then get the fuck out of my sight."

"No, it's not that." you denied the urge to slap him. Azula was content in his arms, and you weren't about to ruin that. "Then what is it about? What do you want? Tell me!" you demanded, not caring about the stares you were getting.

He stayed silent, and you had your answer. "Today isn't the day you should've pulled this. I'm about to overthrow my fucking kingdom, and you want to pull this shit? No. Give me back my child, you can see Zuko and Azula when you get your shit together."

"Sokka, I'll take over from here." you placed your hand on your friend's shoulder. "Let me clarify a few things. The eclipse is only for eight minutes." you cleared up Sokka's plan, answering a couple questions. "Of course, during the eclipse, I lose my power, too." you heard a gasp, and then someone was raising their hand. You pointed to them.

"You're a firebender?" they gasped. "Did you not hear me yelling earlier? I was next in line to rule once upon a time. The name's Princess Y/N, at your service." you couldn't help help but laugh at the outroar that came from the people that didn't know before.

"Calm down. If it helps, I'm adopted. Wait, no. That doesn't help. Anyway, I'm here to help you overthrow the Fire Lord. Any questions?"

"How do you-" your anger spiked, and you whirled to face Haru. "What do you want?" you hissed. "I was wondering- would you, uhhh, like to go out sometime?" you giggled at the irony of the situation, yet you couldn't help but feel like a girl your age, embarrassed in front of her crush. "Do you even know me?" heat rushed to your face, even when you tried to stop it. "I do. I know that you would do anything for your children. I know that you would do anything to protect the people you love, even if it means to betray your own family."

"Is this you getting your shit together?" please say yes. Please say yes. "...yes?" you barely suppressed your squeal. "Then I would love to go out with you. Only if you can handle Zuko and Azula, though." he nodded, cheeks pink. "I can. I told you, I'd help you, no matter what."

"I can take them." you jumped at the new voice. "Excuse me?" you turned to see an older woman with a limp. "I understand that you have to fight, and as much as I'd like to, I'm injured. I can watch your children."

"Thank you so much, ma'am. I'm Y/N, and these are Zuko and Azula. Please, take care of them." she smiled at you, looking grandmotherly. "Of course. Now, get into the submarine before it goes underwater."

You yelled a battle cry, easily taking out the soldiers. Zuko and Azula were being cared for by an injured earthbender in one of the tanks, and you had free reign to do whatever you wanted. "Another firebender!" a soldier gasped. "How could you tell?" you mocked, hitting him over the head and knocking him out.

"You're a Fire Nation citizen! Surrender, or you'll be charged with treason!" you laughed, the sound full of mirth even in the serious situation. "I'm your fucking princess. I'll be the one charging people with treason." they took steps back, and you realized with a jolt that you were winning.

You climbed onto Appa, taking out the towers with lightning. "We're winning!" you knocked out the soldiers manning another tower, throwing them as far as you could. You heard screams, and then a pained groan. You looked over from your victory to see Hakoda, collapsed on the floor. Katara was healing him, and Sokka looked like he was having an important moment.

As much as you liked Hakoda, he was having a moment with his family that you couldn't interrupt on.

You jumped down, striking a couple soldiers. "That's for my brother!" you yelled in triumph.

Things were really starting to look up.
