Chapter Five
____________

Darkness cascaded over the sky as the night came to an end. It was a quarter till nine, but the party still went on while I sat in my room trying to tune out the old school music that blasted through the echoing house. Janet left after everyone sang happy birthday to me and ate from the large and pink cake that had my name engraved at the very top, topping it off with a plastic, gold crown.

Sitting in front of the cake with a fake smile on my face made my stomach turn— I didn't feel right and I wasn't happy. A couple of our guests seemed to have noticed how I truly felt after receiving some comments from the adults throughout the day, stating how I didn't look like them when they turned eighteen, which made me wonder.. how was it for my parents?

My grandparents from both sides of my family weren't as strong on godly beliefs as my parents.

They believe that there's someone who has more power than any of us walking on earth, but they never believed in going to church every Sunday to get reminded of how 'good god is' because for all we know he could be unreal, as my grandmother says.

When it came to my mother, she was silent about her teenage life, and so was my grandmother. The times where we went to visit my grandparents in Germany weren't always the best because my mother remained close by, which I noticed made my grandmother uncomfortable sometimes but she'd brush it off with a smile.

My grandfather was a good man, but he passed away after I turned seven. I don't remember too much about him because he stayed in his room due to him being excessively sick. He couldn't walk and he could barely allow himself to stay awake.

After he passed away, my mothers demeanor changed drastically. She started to have her attitudes and random mood swings, leading to heavy arguments between her and my father.

My father.. he's all a young girl could ever wish for. He's kind, patient, outspoken, joyful— he might be judgmental, but other than that.. he's amazing.

A painful sensation rushed to my cheeks, making me realize that I've been smiling for a while at the thought of my dad, and I bite my lip to conceal my happiness.

Thankfully, my parents didn't take my phone away from me for the night, so that meant I had time to deactivate the parental control and do whatever I wanted while they occupied themselves with wine and strange people.

You'd think that a church would be full of pure and innocent people, but it's not. There's people that join us just to repent on their sins and those human beings are the ones you have to keep a close eye on because you don't know if they're really trying to change or put on a front for whomever.

After changing into some fresh pajamas, I flopped down on my bed and retrieved my phone from my nightstand before searching through the settings to find the parental control section, but have no luck finding it.
