The Real Truth
Series 3 Chapter 2

Harry made his way down to Dumbledore's office. He didn't know exactly why the man wanted to see him but he had a few ideas. It could be about the rumors, maybe it had gotten around that he and Hermione were twins? Had Dumbledore found out about his constant visits to the Chamber? Was this just a tea session where he'd ask Harry how he was doing? Harry didn't know and he didn't like it. Nonetheless he stood, knocking on Dumbledore's door at exactly eight.

"Come in."

Harry walked in and immediately felt a push in his mind. He was suddenly very, very glad he'd put so much effort into Occlumency.

"Harry, have a seat."

Harry noted that Dumbledore's welcome was not near as grandfatherly as usual so he mentally crossed out the meeting for tea.

"Why did you want to see me Professor?" Harry asked, sitting down opposite of the white bearded man.

"There are some things I wish to discuss with you."

Harry nodded.

"I've heard that it's been getting around the school that you're the heir to Slytherin."

"I've noticed."

Dumbledore's frown increased slightly, "Harry. It is more well known now, than ever, that Tom Riddle is Lord Voldemort. If it gets out that Tom is your father it will not be difficult for people to piece together that you are the dark lord's son."

Harry tilted his head, "Why does it matter if it gets out? You've always said that it doesn't matter who my family is but who I am, and I am not my father."

"Yes, but the public will not see it like that. They will assume you to be just like your father."

"I've already fought him three times, brought his return to the ministry, and I'm in Gryffindor. I don't think people will believe me to be on his side. Especially when I kill him."

Harry resisted the urge to wince at the last sentence, instead keeping his voice calm. He couldn't even think of killing his father anymore, Harry finally had a parent, even if he was emotionally distant, Harry knew his father cared for him, and visa versa.

"I merely wonder how people came to know such things."

"Well... Dean, Seamus, and Neville were asking why I looked so different after the start of year feast and I didn't want to lie to my friends so I told them that I had gotten my creature's inheritance as well as my finding out that the Potters adopted me. When they asked if I knew who my real parents were I told them Tom and Elizabeth, then I made a joke about everyone actually being right in second year. I guess someone must've overheard us talking."

Dumbledore sighed, "Harry. I understand that you do not wish to lie to your friends but some things are better kept secret. If this gets out to the papers, I'm afraid people will think you will follow in his footsteps..."

"I won't" Harry firmly stated, and that was the truth. Voldemort's footsteps led to splitting your soul seven times and insanity. Harry didn't want any part in that.

Dumbledore smiled lightly, "That's good to hear. If I'm being honest with myself I feared this too. After all you both are not so different."
