Dream's POV

I woke up before everyone else.

For a few seconds I didn't remember why my chest felt so heavy.

Then I looked across the room.

And remembered.

George wasn't there.

My eyes immediately went to the corner where he normally slept.

Empty.

The blanket was folded exactly where we'd left it.

Untouched.

I hated it.

I sat up slowly and rubbed my face.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

George was always making noise.

Complaining.

Talking.

Arguing.

Even when nobody asked him to.

Now there was nothing.

Just silence.

I stood and quietly walked outside.

The morning air was cool.

The sun was only beginning to rise above the trees.

Everything looked normal.

Which somehow made it worse.

How could the world still look normal?

George died.

Shouldn't something be different?

Shouldn't there be some sign?

Some indication that one of us was gone?

Instead birds chirped.

The river flowed.

The wheat farm swayed in the breeze.

Minecraft kept moving.

Like nothing happened.

I sat on the front porch and stared at the horizon.

"You look terrible."

I jumped.

Turning around, I saw Sapnap standing in the doorway.

"Thanks."

"You're welcome."

He walked outside and sat beside me.

For a while neither of us spoke.

Then he sighed.

"You didn't sleep either?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"Me neither."

We both looked out at the trees.

"I keep expecting him to walk out of the forest."

The words came out before I could stop them.

Nick nodded.

"Yeah."

"He wasn't supposed to die."

"I know."

I clenched my jaw.

"We were supposed to protect each other."

Sapnap looked down at his hands.

"I know."
