Chapter 31

George's POV

I didn't realize how tightly I'd been holding my breath until we actually stopped moving.

The Nether didn't get quieter.

It just got less immediate.

The lava still bubbled below us. The air still hissed with heat. Somewhere in the distance, something probably wanted to kill us.

But for the first time since we arrived, nothing was actively trying to do it right now.

I sat down on the basalt ridge carefully, legs dangling just slightly over the edge.

Bad idea.

Probably.

But everything here was a bad idea anyway.

Sapnap dropped down beside me immediately like he had no concept of personal space or emotional processing.

"Okay," he said, still slightly out of breath. "That was actually kind of insane."

"You almost got us all killed," I replied automatically.

He shrugged. "But we didn't die."

"That is not the same thing."

"It's spiritually the same thing."

Dream sat a few blocks away, already scanning the horizon again like the ghast might respawn out of spite.

Y/N stayed slightly apart from all of us.

Not distant.

Just... quiet.

Different kind of quiet than usual.

I noticed her hands first.

Still shaking a little.

Not obvious.

But there.

I didn't say anything.

Because I wasn't sure if pointing it out would make it worse.

Instead I leaned back on my hands and looked up.

The Nether sky didn't change.

It never did.

It just stayed this endless, burning red like the world had forgotten how to breathe.

Sapnap broke the silence again.

"So," he said, "do we talk about how Dream basically did a superhero landing and saved our lives or—"

"I did not do a superhero landing," Dream cut in immediately.

"You absolutely did."

"I stepped onto a block."

"And it was iconic."

Dream didn't respond to that.

Which, honestly, meant Sapnap had won that round.

I glanced over at Y/N.

She was still looking toward where the ghast had been.

Like she expected it to come back.

"Hey," I said quietly.

She turned her head slightly.

Not fully.

Just enough.

"You okay?"

A pause.

That was normal for her now.

Thinking before answering.
