Y/N's POV

The house felt smaller without George.

Which didn't make any sense.

Nobody had changed anything.

The walls were still where they'd always been.

The furniture was the same.

The storage room was still overflowing with random junk George insisted would be useful someday.

And yet somehow the entire place felt emptier.

I pushed open the front door and stepped outside before I could think about it too much.

The morning air was cool against my skin.

A few chickens wandered around the wheat field I'd planted weeks ago.

The wheat itself was nearly fully grown.

Normally George would've been out here already.

Probably trying to fish in the irrigation trench.

I smiled despite myself.

Then the smile faded.

I hated how every good memory seemed to end the same way now.

With remembering he was gone.

A door opened behind me.

I turned.

Sapnap stepped outside carrying an axe over one shoulder.

His hair looked messy.

Like he'd just rolled out of bed.

Which honestly was probably exactly what happened.

"Morning."

"Morning."

He glanced toward the fields.

"You starting your daily farm inspection?"

I crossed my arms.

"It needs to be done."

"Pretty sure the wheat isn't planning a rebellion."

"You don't know that."

Sapnap nodded seriously.

"You're right. That's on me."

For the first time in days I laughed.

A small one.

But it was enough.

His grin widened immediately.

Like he'd been hoping for that exact reaction.

"See? Better."

I rolled my eyes.

"Don't get used to it."
