Chapter 15

Y/N's POV

Something was wrong.

I knew it the second the sun started setting.

Nick and George were supposed to be back hours ago.

At first I tried not to worry.

They were probably mining.

Or lost.

Or arguing about directions.

Honestly, all three were equally likely.

But as the sky turned orange and then pink, the knot in my stomach only grew tighter.

Dream noticed too.

He was sitting on the front porch sharpening his sword when I walked outside for what felt like the tenth time.

"No sign of them?" he asked.

I shook my head.

"No."

Neither of us said anything after that.

Because there wasn't much to say.

The world was dangerous.

And we all knew it.

I sat beside him on the porch steps.

The wheat field swayed gently in the evening breeze.

Normally I would've found it peaceful.

Tonight it just felt wrong.

Then suddenly—

Footsteps.

Fast.

Uneven.

Running.

Dream was on his feet before I even processed the sound.

Both of us turned toward the forest.

A figure burst through the trees.

Nick.

Alone.

My stomach dropped.

"Nick!"

I sprinted toward him.

By the time I reached him he was breathing hard, covered in mud, and missing half his health.

"Where's George?"

His face immediately fell.

And I knew.

Something had happened.

"He's alive," Nick said quickly.

"He has to be."

Dream grabbed his shoulders.

"What happened?"

Nick swallowed.

Then explained everything.

The witch hut.

The trap.

The cave.

George getting separated.

The witch.

Everything.

By the time he finished, Dream was already grabbing supplies.

"We're leaving now."

"Dream—"

"No."

His voice was firm.
