Y/N's POV

By late afternoon, my feet hurt.

Not unbearably.

Just enough that every step reminded me how long George and I had been walking.

The sun hung low in the sky, painting the grasslands gold as we followed the two moving dots on George's map.

They were close now.

Really close.

Close enough that I found myself looking toward the horizon every few minutes.

George seemed just as restless.

He'd checked the map at least six times in the last ten minutes.

"You know the dots aren't going to disappear if you stop looking."

"They might."

I laughed.

"They won't."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

"How?"

"Because that would be terrible game design."

George snorted.

"Fair."

For a moment, silence settled between us again.

Comfortable.

Easy.

Then George suddenly stopped walking.

I nearly walked straight into him.

"George?"

He didn't answer.

His eyes were fixed on something ahead.

I followed his gaze.

Two figures.

Far in the distance.

Walking toward us.

My heart jumped.

The other players.

A message lit up our watches

For a second, none of us moved.

The distance between us slowly shrinking with every step.

One of the figures wore a green hoodie.

The other had a white bandana tied around his head.

Neither side seemed quite sure what to do.

Wave?

Run?

Draw weapons?

I wasn't sure either.

Then the guy in the green hoodie froze.

Completely froze.

The white-bandana guy nearly walked into him.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

The boy in green ignored him.

His attention locked onto George.

George looked equally stunned.

Like he recognized something.

Or someone.

The air suddenly felt heavier.
