George's POV

The closer we got to the hut, the less I liked this.

The swamp had gone strangely quiet.

No sheep.

No chickens.

Not even the occasional zombie groaning in the distance.

Just water lapping against tree roots and the sound of our boots squelching through mud.

Nick walked slightly ahead of me, iron sword already in his hand.

I gripped mine tighter.

"It's probably just one witch," I said.

"That's what we said ten minutes ago."

"Yeah, but maybe this time it'll be true."

Nick snorted.

We reached the edge of the water surrounding the hut.

Up close, it looked even older.

Dark oak planks covered in moss.

Crooked windows.

A small flower pot sitting on the windowsill.

For some reason, that made it creepier.

Who decorates a murder hut?

"Okay," Nick whispered.

"Okay."

"We go in."

"Right."

"If there's a witch—"

"We stab it."

"Exactly."

I nodded.

Simple plan.

Good plan.

Definitely not a plan that would go horribly wrong.

We climbed the stairs.

One step.

Two steps.

Three.

The wood creaked beneath our weight.

Nick reached for the door.

Then paused.

"You ready?"

"No."

"Fair enough."

He pushed the door open.

The inside was empty.

A crafting table.

A cauldron.

A mushroom.

No witch.

No mobs.

Nothing.

I frowned.

"Seriously?"

Nick looked around.

"Maybe she's outside?"

I stepped into the room.

"Three days for an empty hut. That's actually embarrass—"

Crash.

A glass bottle shattered at my feet.

Purple particles exploded upward.

My entire body immediately felt heavy.

"George!"

I spun around.
