Y/N's POV

The walk home was silent.

Not the comfortable kind.

Not the peaceful kind.

The awful kind.

The kind where everyone was thinking the same thing but nobody wanted to say it out loud.

George was gone.

Every time I looked behind us, part of me expected him to be there.

Complaining.

Making some sarcastic comment.

Arguing with Dream about something stupid.

But he wasn't.

And every time I remembered that, it felt like someone punched me in the chest.

The sun had started rising by the time we reached the house.

Dream opened the door first.

Nobody rushed inside.

Nobody spoke.

We just stood there.

Staring.

Because this house had been built for four people.

Now it only held three.

Finally Dream stepped aside.

"Come on."

His voice sounded tired.

I walked in first.

Nick followed.

Dream shut the door behind us.

The silence returned immediately.

I dropped my backpack beside one of the chests.

Nick set down the remaining supplies.

Dream leaned his sword against the wall.

Nobody knew what to do.

Because surviving a night was one thing.

Surviving after losing someone was something else entirely.

I wandered into the kitchen area without thinking.

My eyes drifted over everything we'd built together.

The extra storage.

The furnaces.

The table.

The chairs.

Then I saw it.

A fishing rod.

Leaning against the wall.

George's fishing rod.

The one he'd spent an hour making because he insisted fishing was a "valuable survival skill."

The one Dream had made fun of endlessly.

The one George had refused to leave behind.

My throat tightened.

No.

No no no.

Not now.

I grabbed the fishing rod before I could stop myself.

My fingers curled around it.

And suddenly every memory came rushing back.

George teaching me how to fish.
