Chapter 50

Y/N's POV

The next morning started with an argument.

Which honestly felt normal.

"Why do I have to go with Dream?"

Sapnap was leaning against a chest with his arms crossed.

Dream looked up from the map spread across the table.

"Because you're the only one who can survive being around me for more than four hours."

"I hate that you're right."

George laughed into his sleeve.

I rolled my eyes.

The four of us had spent nearly an hour discussing supplies.

We still needed more food.

More arrows.

More resources.

And eventually more Ender Pearls.

The challenge wasn't forcing us to move anymore.

But none of us were stupid enough to think we were ready for the Stronghold.

Not yet.

Dream pointed at the map.

"Sapnap and I are heading east."

"Gross."

"You'll survive."

Then his eyes shifted toward me.

Just for a second.

Long enough to make my stomach do something annoying.

"You and George can check the river valley."

I immediately looked away.

Pretending I hadn't noticed.

Pretending he hadn't either.

An hour later George and I were walking through the forest.

The weather was perfect.

Not too hot.

Not too cold.

Just enough sunlight filtering through the leaves to make everything feel peaceful.

Which probably should've worried me.

Nothing in our lives stayed peaceful for long.

George walked beside me quietly.

Occasionally kicking a flower.

Or a rock.

Or anything else unfortunate enough to end up near his feet.

Eventually I laughed.

"What did that flower ever do to you?"

George looked down.

Then immediately kicked another one.

"It knew what it did."

I snorted.

"You're ridiculous."

"I know."

The conversation died after that.

Not awkwardly.

Comfortably.

The kind of silence that only happened when you knew someone well.
