The bright neon lights of the fast food chain comes into view, and you let out a sigh of relief. Once inside, your gaze travels around until it lands on powder blue locks. You begin to raise your hand to wave but freeze at the sight of the others.
Seated in the back corner of the somewhat vacant burger chain are Kuroko, Kagami, Aomine, Kise, Momoi, and Midorima. You wonder how this came to be especially when this was supposed to be a late afterschool date with Kuroko. Neither of you have seen much of each other in a week, so in hopes of catching up before Kuroko is whisked off into training camp, you two decided to meet up after basketball practice today.
Fortunately, you've encountered most of the group in a recurring fashion that you find yourself more shocked than afraid of their presence.
"Good evening," you greet them when you make it to the table.
Momoi jumps from her seat, excitement bubbling in her every action. "SENPAI!" She embraces and twirls you around with her. "Tetsu said you'd be coming, I'm so happy you did!"
You force out a laugh, "Oh? Haha... How did you guys end up crashing our date?"
Momoi still holds you fierce in her arms as Aomine speaks up. "We were all here eating before Tetsu showed up with Kagami."
You send Kagami an inquisitive glance and the boy raises his hand in defense. "I didn't follow him. I was already on my way here to get dinner."
Kise raises his hand. "I followed Kurokocchi!"
Kuroko, who appears the most annoyed despite his blank expression, sends a glare over to Kise. "I told you I had a date with [F.Name] and not to follow."
"I wanted a reunion!"
As much as you'd like to throw your bag at Kise for interrupting your date, your desire to drown your emotions from the terrible day overwhelms that need. You notice the empty chair near Kuroko and plop yourself down next to him. He's already ordered your usual meal, and you begin to eat.
Kuroko eyes you warily. "I'm sorry that it became a gathering..."
You wave your hand around. "It's okay, I just have a lot to tell you."
"You can tell us!" Kise joins in. You can sense his genuine interest in what you have to say, but you know it's due to his past history with you. You were never interested in him, never gave him the time of day, and always afraid to approach anyone. Nijimura-senpai's best friend on top of it all. And now you are seated before him, willing to divulge information about yourself.
"I have a cultural festival coming up."
"You don't sound too enthusiastic about your cultural festival," Kagami mentions as he stuffs a few more burgers in his mouth. Aomine mirrors his movements, and with the way they're devouring their meals, it looks as if its an eating contest.
However, as much as you'd like to laugh at them, you can't help but feel some dread in your system. "I'm going to be the chairperson of the whole event."
They all stop to stare at you with wide-eyes.
"How did that happen?" Kuroko asks gently.
"Ikeda-sensei put our names in a jar and chose from there. Since we're class 3-1, we have the best students in the grade so they naturally made us do it. But no one wanted that responsibility because of university exams."
"Wow, that's shitty that you got picked," Aomine comments in between bites.
"No one volunteered to help you?" Momoi askes worriedly. "What about student council?"
"Something happened in student council that they're indisposed. But my friend Yuuka said she'll help out... though she's also busy with the basketball club's preparations," you sigh heavily at the thought. "Other than that, the rest of the class mentioned they'll try to help, but I know it's all on me."
"Looks like you'll be the face of the cultural festival," Kise adds with a smile.
Your blood runs cold and your whole body stiffens at the thought. "Kise-kun, don't put pressure on her," Kuroko's monotone voice chastises. "She doesn't enjoy that type of attention."
"She needs to stop being like that and overcome her fears," Aomine points out without a care.
"Daiki!" Momoi slaps his arm.
He pays no attention to the insignificant pain and shrugs, "Just saying."
Kuroko directs his concerned stare on to you, but to his relief, you aren't fazed by Aomine's direct comment. "Maybe it is fate that I got chosen and I need to approach this as a learning opportunity," you mumble.
He smiles at your hopeful revival. "I'm sure you can do it."
"You guys are sickening," Midorima states, after having remained silent throughout most of the conversation.
"Says the guy who just got a girlfriend," Kise winks.
"It's a WHOLESOME RELATIONSHIP!"
"Oh wow! Midorima-kun, that's amazing," you gasp. You never pictured him to be with anyone! "Tell us more about her!"
Before he can reject your request, he spots your curious yet excited smile. Not once had he ever spotted such a smile, and for some reason, he doesn't feel inclined to reject. "She's talented in archery."
The rest of the night is spent teasing Midorima and eating burgers. A joy you treasure and hold dear to your heart.

A/N: Gotta sprinkle a tiny bit of GoM to lighten the mood before things start getting messy. Also I'm just going to add in case there are any misunderstandings: the guys (except Akashi and Kuroko) aren't romantically interested in the reader... She's always been this mystery to them especially as Nijimura's best friend. So, now that she is finally opening up, they want to reciprocate the same effort she puts in being this vulnerable. And yes, Midorima is talking about his relationship in my other story Assiduity. And the Akashi tidbit is explained in my other story Conveyance.
Hope you enjoyed!
