"I thought we were having pot luck with my boyfriend today," you call out as you run after your parents. They are one step out the door with giant smiles on their faces.

"But the Nijimura's invited us to the beach. We have to go!" your mother explains. "Just because Shuzo isn't here doesn't mean I can't hang out with his mother."

You pout. "But you made plans already."

"Yes, and I am cancelling them."

"No! I want to see Tetsuya today," you counter. "I haven't been able to hang out with him much and you guys said you wanted to see him again."

Your mother sends your father a plea to intervene. With a sigh, he turns to face you with a stern gaze. "As much as I hate to cancel on those plans, Nijimura seems to be more upbeat now that her husband's condition has improved. We want to support our friend as much as we can."

Your contesting quiets at his reasoning. It's true that Shuzo's mother has finally started going out again and enjoying life. The moment her son and husband left to America, she was distraught but did her best to keep it together for her other two children. Your seldom visits were only to present her leftovers or snacks as instructed by your mother but also to keep on eye on things for Shuzo.

But you've been so involved recently with your relationship that you had forgotten to check in with the Nijimura family. Guilt eats at you, but your resolve to see your boyfriend trumps that. "Well, I'm not going."

Your dad sighs and scratches the back of his head. "Fine. You have the ingredients for the hot pot in the refrigerator... and no funny business!" You blush at this warning.

"So that's why my parents aren't here," you mention as you place the hot pot on the table's surface. "Which is honestly for the best. I've always wanted to have hot pot in my room!"

Kuroko chuckles at your explanation. "Your parents are an odd bunch. They are strict at times and then they're not."

"I think they trust you a lot," you say as you scoop the contents of the hot pot with a spoon and taste them. You hum with delight, "Delicious!"

Kuroko does well to hide the swell of pride he feels. "I see... Let me help you with the bowls." He reaches out to take the serving spoon and begins to place heavy amounts of stew into your bowl. Your stomach growls at the appetizing sight.

"Itadakimasu!"

Both of you chow down and begin chatting about school. As the contents of the bowl diminish, so does the amount to talk about. For some reason, you skirt around things about Ikeda-sensei in a deliberate fashion.

After two servings, the bowls appear empty and Kuroko presses on the sore subject. "So what happened with your friend Yuuka that day? You said you were going to tell me."

You lower your gaze as you contemplate on whether to inform him or not. You would have if your conversation with Yuuka had gone differently, but what really holds you back is that afternoon with Ikeda-sensei. How do you admit to Kuroko that you were alone with a man that showed heavy interest in you?

If you spilled the beans about Yuuka, he will figure out that there is more to the story and fish it out of you. Kuroko was very good at that. The only way to avoid the issue is to throw his attention elsewhere.

"I got demoted kinda." The lie feels like acid on your tongue, but you're more afraid of how he will view you if the truth came out. Concern etches his face and guilt begins to consume you. "It's nothing big, just that they want me doing other stuff since Yuuka handles everything else."

"I'm sorry that happened to you. You're such a good manager, it's odd that they would demote you." His hand caresses your cheek in hopes of consoling you. "Are you okay? It seems a lot has been happening to you while we're apart."

If you could, you'd die of guilt right now. He stares at you with sympathy even though you feel dirty and a liar. "Yes, thankfully the festival has kept me busy so don't worry."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes! Please, just... leave it alone."

He doesn't want to and snakes a hand into yours. At the contact of his skin, you realize his need to continue consoling you. Despite his gentle prodding, you respond in the opposite manner. Your hand passes his and reaches out to push him against the bed frame behind him. Heated lips meet his, taking him by surprise.

"[F.N-Name]?" He tries to say between kisses, but you don't afford him any air. Your body crawls into his lap as your hands grab the fabric of his t-shirt to hold him closer to you.

It isn't until you finally stop for air do you indulge him of your want. "Can we go farther today?"

The feel of the wooden bed frame on his back makes him more aware than ever of your intentions. However, the sudden gravitation to more intimate acts only brings another wave of distress.

You don't wait for him to agree and begin to undress. Steam blows out of his ears and he finally takes the initiative to stop you. "Hold on, [F.Name]." You stop midway through the last button of your blouse when he takes you out of your trance.

"You don't want to?"

"It's not that." He averts his eyes to a distant corner of your room. "If you don't want to talk because you're scared of what I will say, don't force yourself to do this at least."

Tears line your eyes. He hit the nail on the head--though for different reasons. His genuine concern only worsens your state of mind, but you hold back the impending tears. You don't want to cause him any more trouble even if he is unaware of it.

"I'm sorry... I just don't want you to hate me," you mumble out as you return to buttoning up your blouse. Once your chest is fully clothed, he returns his gaze onto you.

He smiles, "I don't think I can ever hate you." His words have always given you hope, but today they make you feel uglier than ever.
