[C.16] College: Diary Entry Sixteen

The noise of sneakers skidding around on the basketball court demonstrates the focus of the players. With practice in full swing, you toil around with several tasks, hoping to complete them in quick succession. This has been the state of your afternoons for the past month ever since you were given the position as manager.

You assumed that your work will mirror that of middle/high school, but your responsibilities have increased exponentially. Not only do you have to maintain the appearance of the gym with the help of the lower string players, but you also worked closely with the coaches in scheduling and planning events. All tasks are in your wheelhouse so you find a comfortable groove in your work.

Fortunately, the players in the team are respectful and leave you alone to do your duties. Sometimes they speak to you as a friend; no one ventures into trying anything more with you, knowing Nijimura's claim to you.

It was the first thing known about you. Before you even stepped onto the court, the team heard about your involvement with Nijimura and the downfall of his relationship with Marie. Hikari, who tags around the team after meeting them a few times, spilled all the details to the group during a late night outing. No one asked Nijimura about it as he seemed to be going through a rough patch, but weeks later, he announced the arrival of his new girlfriend as team manager. You appeared before them, nervous and quiet, and it was then they realized how exaggerated the rumors were about you.

On the first day, they found out that you've known him since childhood. On the second day, they noticed just how attached you two were. It wasn't anything they had ever seen with him and Marie, so they understood just how layered the situation was. 

No one approached you... unless they wanted something. 

You hear the call of your name and pause your surveillance of the practice match. It's Abe, a second year and small forward for the team; he comes running over with a magazine on hand.

"An autograph for my sister, please!" He hands you the magazine, opening it to a specific page. There you find yourself and Akari, back to back, in your stunning steampunk attire. Mesmerizing and taking the internet by storm, much of your privacy has been outed to the world. Many past classmates whom you had forgotten about have reached out in hopes of reconnecting. It's been a mission to avoid your text messages, and you have debated getting a new phone number.

You grab the publication and his sharpie. Once you scribble your sloppy autograph, you heave out a sigh. "Is it really necessary? I'm not even famous."

"Don't be silly. The internet is obsessed with you," Abe chuckles. "My sister and her friends have this photo up on their wall, that's how I noticed it was you."

"That's so embarrassing."

"No, no! You're supposed to say 'I AM THANKFUL FOR MY FANS!' when people tell you about having pictures of you," Abe exclaims. "None of this self-deprecating bs."

You send him a wary look. "I'm not really a model though. It was just for a friend."

"But you still have fans." Another player adds as he enters the conversation. Shinji, a tall mixed-race boy who boasts beautiful bronzed skin. He is a calming factor for all his team members that it's no wonder he became vice-captain for the team. "If you don't show how grateful you are for the love, people will turn on you quick."

"I understand," you sigh. "I am grateful to those who purchase the magazine, but above all for making the ad a success. Akari's friend is crazy busy now with several requests for her work."
