[College, First Year]
The door pries open and you are greeted by Shuzo's face. "Yo," he curtly says as he meets the unimpressed stare of Kuroko. Behind him are you and your parents as everyone holds their portion of your luggage.
Tension begins to form though Shuzo always appears oblivious to it. So are your parents as they push past Kuroko to enter your new apartment.
"How quaint!" your mother comments as she shimmies the last of your luggage inside. The small hallway entrance holds most of the baggage, but boxes upon boxes fill the living room along with basic furniture. Across, bags of groceries finds themselves haphazardly thrown about in the kitchen which only allows one person at a time.
You spot Kuroko place his portion in a far corner of the living room and he begins unpacking some knickknacks you brought from home. You waste no time in rushing to his side. "Wait, I think those go in my room... and those go here on the kotatsu."
Kuroko follows your directions and returns some items to the box while leaving the others on the table's surface. He grabs the box and travels deeper into the apartment, down the hallway where three doors reside: two bedrooms and one bathroom.
You trail after him with a box of your own, and when you place it on your bed, you face Kuroko's blank expression. Due to the whirlwind of moving to a new place, you didn't have a chance to reveal a critical piece of information to your boyfriend which now results in his annoyance.
The sounds of your parents speaking with Shuzo and his girlfriend gives you leeway to quietly close the door behind you. A forced smile meets his unamused gaze. "So..."
"Why did you leave out the part that you are moving in with Nijimura?" he asks.
Your smile fades at his direct question. "I'm sorry, Tetsuya... When I told you that we were looking for an apartment for myself, I really meant that. I didn't know that my parents also had this sort of idea in mind."
"You could have informed me after they found it."
Your heart hammers with guilt. "Well, yes. I just..." You don't want to be honest with him once more, mostly because you fear what he will say since recently, you had been somewhat... bratty? But you find Shuzo's girlfriend partly to blame.
The amount of awkwardness the girl has brought did little to warm you up to her. Ever since she was introduced to you, you haven't seen Shuzo without her. If you passed by his house just to chat, she was there. If you invited him to the movies, she was there. If you asked him to tag along to go see his middle school classmates, she was there.
Not to say Kuroko wasn't there either... but you didn't invite her. She didn't invite herself either, she just so happened to ALWAYS be there beside Shuzo. You felt like every action you performed was under heavy scrutiny around Shuzo. You had to be mindful of her, and you didn't like it.
It resulted in some childish remarks on your part, some that were immediately chastised by both Shuzo and Kuroko. Her side was always chosen, making you feel like a villain in all this.
"It's just that you already have been so angry with me lately," you huff. "I don't like her, but people keep forcing me to try to like her."
"She's a normal person, [F/N]. You never gave her a chance, and honestly, I've never seen you like this before," Kuroko explains as he grabs your hands. "You know I trust you more than anything in the world, but it starts to make me feel more insecure the moment you stay quiet like this."
You recall a specific incident when you left your boyfriend in the dark and shudder. "Yeah, I'm sorry."
"It feels as if you are trying to go back to those middle school days. Those days when I wasn't in the picture," he states quietly. It comes off as a whisper, but it packs a horrible punch to your conscious.
You crane your neck forward and land a soft kiss on his cheek. "No, I'm sorry, Tetsuya. That isn't what I want at all... It's just not my fault she gets jealous about every little thing we do."
Kuroko shakes his head, and as usual chooses the side of Marie. "You don't make it easy for her. They've been friends since he first moved to America and in a relationship for a year. She followed him here to be together... And now she needs to fight with you for his attention."
You hum as you lose yourself in thought. He always makes the most valid of points, but you never want to listen when it comes to Shuzo. You find yourself becoming more and more selfish with his friendship every day when that shouldn't be happening in the first place.
Kuroko realizes the little impact he has on your conclusions and heaves out a sigh. "Nevermind."
His final word brings terror into your system as you realize his annoyance of you. "I-I'm sorry. I understand what you're saying, but he was my friend first. I'm just trying to make up lost time."
Another sigh escapes him. "I know, but maybe in moderation? You have a lifetime of friendship with him ahead of you."
The thought of a lifetime reassures you, and a smile reappears. "You're right... maybe in uni, I can become more friends with her."
Kuroko nods his head. "That'd make things a lot easier on Nijimura if you two were friends." You widen your smile in agreeance. Seeing you be pliable to his wishes brings some relief to him and he returns the smile. "I trust you."
You watch him quietly as he embraces you. Warmth envelops your system, but you ponder on the frequency on his statement. Time and time again, he keeps reminding you of his trust and it makes you wonder.
Was he saying that as a warning to you or to keep himself rooted to his sanity?
