"How have you been?" you finally say after minutes of silence.
"Worried out of my mind," your father responds softly. "I have been searching for you everywhere. You don't return my phone calls, and you aren't at the apartment anymore. All Shuzo told me was that you were with a friend and that was it... I can't believe Shuzo would abandon you like this."
"I did something stupid and hurt him badly. It's not his fault," you mumble as you still refuse to look at him.
"Yes, your mother told me."
"Oh yeah, where is she?" You glance past the open door where Kise and Akari are standing in the hallway. They still bicker, but it seems the violence has subsided. However, your mother appears nowhere in sight.
"Living with your aunt at the moment."
Your feigned apathy dissipates. "... What? Why?" You face your father, and it's then you finally witness the extent of your father's disheveled appearance. His usual slick back hair has no form, dark bags reside under his eyes, and he sports a stubbled face.
"I kicked her out of the house," he sighs.
His statement puts you in a state of disbelief. Your parents never fought, and if they did, it was never in front of you. Your dad always went with the whims of your mother and showered her with presents any chance he got. For him to kick her out... Not even for her to leave, but him to throw her out of the house, something dire must have ensued in your absence.
"What happened?"
"I heard it all," he states quietly. "I heard what she called you. If only I had been quicker in getting that phone out of her hand, you wouldn't have had to experience something so awful. But what was more awful... was her trying to justify saying those things to you when I confronted her."
"Dad..."
"My only child. My daughter." His fists clench up at the thought. "And Shuzo as well. You may have hurt him, but he didn't even try to help me track you down. At least he could have given me an address to know that you were safe. I asked him several times, but he never answered my calls. The only thing he said was that you were safe and that was it. Shuzo... I don't care how much you hurt him. You made a mistake, you broke his heart. But you're still [Full Name], his childhood friend. You still deserve to be safe."
"I..." You want to tell him differently. You want to object and say how much you don't deserve to be safe. But your father is too earnest in his feelings to think otherwise.
"I don't care how many mistakes you make. I don't care who you hurt in pursuit of your happiness. I don't care if you go around sleeping with men every day. I don't give a damn about any of that." Although your father is working himself up into a frenzy, his words provide you a life line. "You're my daughter. You deserve to live no matter what you do. Don't discard your life. Don't think you're insignificant just because of the mistakes you've made."
Your lower lip trembles at his heartfelt appeal until you are once again a mess. He leans forward to capture your frame into his arms, allowing you to wail candidly in his security. Yet this time, he too cries in his silent fashion.
A nurse arrives moments later to secure another IV onto your hand. Of course, she chastises you for your moment of violence but ultimately leaves you alone after her job is done. Once the door is closed, you eye your father shamefully.
