Your father has never been a man of many emotions. He has never shown compassion or love; never paid any mind to your interests or who you your friends were. He adheres to the whims of your mother and likes to toil away by the television.

But he has always shown his love for you in his own way. It took you a while to notice, but he has always been the supporting rock for the family. A constant throughout these emotional times.

He stands at the door, eager to greet you. At the sight of Nijimura beside you, he smiles but then his gaze travels to your joined hands. In an instant, many questions arise but he cannot hold back the most essential one.

"What happened to Kuroko?"

Your mother returns with a skip to her step. Her breathing sounds winded, and you'd expect so after she sprinted from the grocery store. Upon hearing the news from your father, you heard her squeal and promise to come right away. She wasn't lying...

When she enters the living room, she spots you sitting next to Nijimura on the sofa as you two skim a photo album.

"So it really did happen," she exhales excitedly.

Nijimura is quick to stand at her presence. He scratches the back of his head, not knowing how to meet her enthusiasm as it proves to be too much. When he glances back at you in hopes of your aid, you comply with little passion.

"Don't be weird about it," you say as you give her none of your attention. "Aw, look at this one, Shuzo. Your first karate lesson."

Nijimura continues in his erect place as he had hoped to do little explaining. Yet the gaze of your mom demands it. "Ah yeah, things happened and now we're dating."

Your mother accepts his account on the situation. She knows Nijimura won't give her the details, and you appear to be in a mood. "Well, it's about time. I'm sure we will talk about marriage pretty soon!"

You let out a loud groan at her blunt comment. "Just be quiet about it all. Maybe the reason why we never got together in the first place was because of how awkward it was having you play matchmaker 24/7."

She gasps at your rude disposition, and your father snaps his head over to you to gauge your expression. Anger mixed with displaced fault dances in your optics. Nijimura opens his mouth to coax an apology out of you, but you don't give him the chance. You stand and rush upstairs to your room, ignoring the stares that follow.

"D-Did she come back meaner?" your mom asks as she accepts no wrongdoing.

Your father sighs and returns his attention to the television. "Leave her be... Also, we are going out to dinner with the Nijimura's to celebrate."

"Great idea," your mom laughs. "Shuzo, please help me with the groceries."

"Yeah." He rushes over to begin grabbing bags from your mother, but his eyes remain on the stairs where you disappeared, aware of the burdens that haunt you.

Your heart aches strongly in your chest at the sight of the restaurant. You sit across Shuzo with a listless stare while both sets of parents sit beside each other on the sides. It's a table for exactly six people, nestled deep inside the steakhouse where you went to for your graduation party.

Memories of your time with Kuroko here has you reliving in your lie. How you pronounced that you only had eyes for him; that Nijimura was just a friend to you.

Shuzo's attention bores into you, and you stare back at your new paramour. You wish you hadn't had to destroy Kuroko's heart for this to happen. You wish you could place the blame on your mother. Maybe if she had minded her own business, you would have fallen in love with Nijimura quicker and avoided the love of Kuroko.
