If only you can disappear from your troubles. Or... if only your troubles didn't follow you.
You knew Kuroko would find out about your union to Nijimura one day, but you never thought it'd be this soon and in this manner. You believed you couldn't hurt him anymore. You truly thought that the phone call was sufficient, but all you did was leave the door open for his return.
And return he did.
Njimura stands there in shock at his appearance and isn't sure how to handle it. He would unflinchingly punch any stalker of yours or yell at any aggressor, but Kuroko is neither; no, the broken boy before him is but a consequence of both your actions. This is the boy who who earned Nijimura's respect. That if you had to be left alone with anyone, it'd be him. That if you had to marry anyone, it'd be him.
"Tet-- Kuroko," you correct yourself quickly. "This..."
Nijimura can sense you failing with your words and interjects. "I can go inside while you two talk, or I can explain it with you."
You shake your head. "I need to do this by myself."
He agrees, and as much as he wants to press a kiss on your head for good luck, he isn't interested in throwing oil onto the fire. Instead, he peels his arm away from your body and squeezes your hand before letting go. He saunters over past Kuroko to enter the apartment, giving you one last look as the door closes behind him.
Alone, you face Kuroko, who still stares at you with betrayal dancing in his optics. There is a modicum of anger but it bears no fangs until you supply your reasoning.
"There's a park behind the building. L-Let's go there," you state as you turn on your heel.
[x]
You sit in a park that has some occupants to it. Most have left in search of something else to do; others remain in their quiet stupor, reading or tending to their children who play on the the playground.
Silently, you two find a deserted bench and sit there. It's only been a few minutes, but your anxiety has already reached peak levels. Many words can be uttered in self-defense yet none can justify your decision in hurting him.
Nonetheless, you still try. "Kuroko. I'm so sorry. I--"
"You keep saying you're sorry, but what exactly are your apologies for?" He seething rage appears muted for your sake, as he still holds you dear to him. "Is it because you were cheating with him all this time?"
"I didn't cheat!" you gasp. "I... We didn't do anything like that."
"Then what happened, [F.Name]? What happened from the time we argued about Marie to now? It's been three weeks."
You lower your gaze to the wooden surface of the bench. Tints of red obscure your vision as the flowers he brought for you lay haphazardly beside his trembling hands.
"I... She was bullying me with her friends, Kuroko." You finally meet his gaze, steeling your resolve. "I wanted to tell you but you were so interested in making sure that Shuzo's relationship with Marie stayed in tact instead of worrying about us."
"T-That isn't true," Kuroko shakes his head. "You were the one so concerned about their relationship when all I wanted was for you to look at me... But, I had no idea that they were being that horrible to you."
"It was hard to tell you when all the topic does is drive a wedge between us."
You can see his expression morph into agreement, but he still ponders on many things. "But what in the world happened?"
"Shuzo found out and they broke up, but before they did, she said that maybe I am in love with him as well." You can see something in Kuroko snap; as if his nightmare had become reality. And in fact, it had.
"You told me that you never saw him in that way though."
"I know, but people keep telling me that it's meant to be. I kept ignoring it, but when I actually gave that notion attention, I realized that he's just someone I cannot give up so easily. My parents say it, his parents. His siblings joke about it, and maybe... maybe..."
"Did our relationship mean nothing to you?" Kuroko asks as he holds in his emotions the best he can.
"Of course it did!" you exclaim. "You mean the world to me!"
"Then why are you being so easily swayed by others' opinions and ruining it," he states softly.
"I just... I just thought that maybe what I do have with Shuzo is special." Again, you return your vision to the bench's surface.
Kuroko's tearful expression dissipates under the severity of your statement. He no longer wants to fight, no longer wants to try. "And what we have isn't. What we had... [F.Name], we have been through a lot, horrible things and great things. Is this what you want to do?"
You cannot respond, not when you are still unsure on your decision. You have the resolve to do it, but the reasoning still leaves you at a loss. Yet the grim stare of Kuroko bodes another conclusion.
Tears roll down your cheeks, fresh with your realization. "I cannot go back now and undo this all, Kuroko."
He knows this as all his trust and hope crumbled the moment he saw your arms wrapped around Nijimura's. With nothing left to say, he stands.
You stand too, jumping with panic and grabbing hold of his hand. "W-Wait," you stutter as you try to find something to make him still remain in your life. If you leave things as they are, you know he will never speak to you again.
"Yes?"
"I... None of this means that I was never in love with you," you explain hastily.
"You just love Nijimura-senpai more," he finishes.
"I don't," you sigh as you let go of his hand, "know if that is the case. That's what I'm trying to figure out, and I know it isn't fair to you at all. But I need to find out."
"Even if means losing what we have," he states, this time with apathy.
You stare at him as the world stills. The dire consequence now stares right back at you, and your final choice to let go is now. "I need to find out, I'm sorry."
He has no more emotions to give as his system breaks down. Lethargy is all that greets you as he breathes out the last of his words. "I see. Then I wish you the best, [L.Name]."
"I--" You choke out a sob but the burn of vile returns. Quickly, you slam a hand over your mouth to halt any appearance of your breakfast. At the sight of Kuroko leaving the park, more tears flow until he is but a speck in the crowd.
Again, your heart screams for you to stop this madness, but you ignore it. You know this is all critically wrong, and the thought looms over you enough that you can no longer hold back; you rush to the bushes to eject your breakfast and the surge burns your throat bad this time.
As you cough into the bushes, you gain concerned stares but they are quickly turned elsewhere when you begin to let out a loud sob. "Oh god, Tetsuya, what have I done?" you cry out as you puke once more.
