"Are you sure you don't want to have dinner?" your mother questions as she peeks her head into your room. Soft electric music fills the ambiance as you lay on your bed with your eyes glued to the manga before you.

When your eyes flit over to meet hers, you quickly return them to your book. "No, I ate before coming back."

Your mother knows you're in a mood that doesn't allow her to force food down your throat. The hollow gaze you wear worries her tremendously, but she doesn't know how to ease what bothers you. "Well, I'm going to pack up the leftovers for your lunch tomorrow."

"Thanks."

Your mother closes the door and walks away. You hear her travel to the kitchen and begin dispelling her worries to your father. It's all but a distant sound. A few days have passed since the confrontation with Yuuka, and you have been a disaster since. You two don't speak, and you've refused to return to the basketball club. However, you see her glued to your teacher's side at all times, glaring at you to look away from him.

You wonder if she had informed him of what you said. Sometimes, you feel as if she did due to his constant avoidance of you if Yuuka was around, but then you recall the time he interrogated you and made sure you kept your lips sealed. It feels as if there would repercussions should she have told him, and now that you had spilled the beans, you haven't experienced his wrath so far.

Your phone vibrates with a text and you read the contents of the message. Your heart hammers with a plethora of emotions at Kuroko's kind words. But just like yesterday night, you leave him on read with no intention of responding until tomorrow morning.

The guilt of lying to Kuroko and now the events that had unfolded has kept you silent with him as well. You don't want to apprise him of any of the events in fear of his reaction. Aya is the next person closest to you, and you have doubts on whether to tell her or not. Yuuka and Aya weren't really speaking, and you aren't sure how she would react to the news.

You pause your thoughts at the remembrance of a certain raven-haired individual. Your best friend since infancy. Someone who has always brought you back from the dead time and time again.

You grab your phone. With the time difference being twelve hours, you know he might be in school but you call. He doesn't pick up the first time, but you continue your annoyance until he finally responds after ten minutes.

"What the actual fuck is wrong with you?" Shuzo's voice flits through and relief washes over you.

"H-Hey!" you croak out.

"Did you call me just to say hey?" he grunts.

"No, no, no... I just wanted to catch up with you."

You hear him sighing and mumbling to himself about how he shouldn't adhere to your weird tendencies, but ultimately, he still does. "During my lunchtime?"

"Oh, are there others around you?" you ask.

"No, I had to run up the stairs to the rooftop to take this call," he explains angrily. "You're lucky I'm doing this because you called 50 times and I haven't heard from you in like two months."

Happiness swells in your heart, and you sit up to begin your conversation with him. You fill him in on everything he needs to know about the previous months: your field trip, how you see his former teammates a lot more now, the cultural festival, how his mother and family appear to be doing.

Conversation with him is as easy as it was back in the day when he was closer in proximity. When you get on to the topic of Kuroko, your sadness returns. "Yes, he's been the best boyfriend in the entire world. I want to be as kind as him."

Shuzo chuckles, "I'm happy that you reciprocate his feelings. I remember when he tailed you around like a shadow and you had no idea how stupidly in love he was with you."

Your mouth opens but nothing comes out. You feel disgusting, but now you realize that you had always been this horrible. "Yeah... Listen, I want your opinion on something."

"Oh? Can it wait? Lunch is ending."

"It can't."

For you to demand his attention now, he accepts his fate that he will miss his next class. "What is it?"

You let out a sigh as you begin your explanation. "So my friend is dating a teacher... I think it's crazy, but she says I'm being too paranoid."

"You aren't. That's weird as shit," Shuzo bluntly states.

"She says she's eighteen."

"Doesn't matter. It's still a teacher and a student," he scoffs.

"W-What should I do if this teacher tries to hit on me?" you mumble.

The fear in your voice catches his attention. "Did he?"

"Maybe?"

"Punch him."

You shake your head and he can hear you adamant reaction. "N-NO WAY! You can't hit a teacher!"

"If the teacher so much as looks at you funny, you have full permission from the entire population of Japan to hit him." He makes it sound as if it's easy to hurt an adult, but then again, this is Nijimura Shuzo: the boy who pretends he's part of the yakuza.

"I will think about it."

"If not, pepper spray him," he finally becomes reasonable. You force out a chuckle, one that doesn't relieve him of any concern. "Are you okay?"

"No... but I don't want to talk about it just yet." When silence answers you, you notice that he has accepted your refusal to speak on the matter. "So what are you doing for uni?"

"I am applying to a few here and a few over there... I don't know yet, but I think I might stay in America even when my dad returns." The falter in his usually secured voice forces a realization out of you.

"You don't want to come back?"

He clicks his tongue as he carefully chooses how to respond. "It's not that. I just have a life here now, and the level of play in America is amazing."

Ah, basketball. You've always known it to be the source of his happiness besides his family and teammates. When he discarded it back in Teiko, the devastation left him destitute. You should be happy for him that he's rediscovered that love in America.

"I understand, Shuzo. I just wanted to be with my friend once more, but I suppose I can see you when you come to visit your family," you answer mechanically.

He doesn't buy your words, not for one minute. "I'm sorry, [Name]."

His apology does nothing to ease the hurt in your heart, but you have to learn to accept his decision in finding happiness. "It's okay. Everything will be okay here."

Despite your world beginning to crumble around you.
