Sara sat quietly with Mila, who was once again feeling the weight of boredom. Mila lay on her back, her eyes fixed on the little decorations hanging above her crib, their gentle sway doing little to entertain her. Today was her first birthday, a significant milestone, though the memories of her previous life were already fading. She could only vaguely recall that on this day, her father had been the only one to give her a gift. The memory of the small teddy bear he had once given her came to mind—a simple, yet cherished gesture of affection.
"Lady Mila, you are growing up so fast," Sara said with a soft smile, her voice filled with warmth. "In the future, I hope you find someone who can treat you with love and care." These words stirred something deep within Mila, a reminder of the betrayal she had suffered in her past life. She remembered the deep resentment she felt toward her older sister, who had taken the man Mila had been arranged to marry. But now, in this new life, she had no desire to fight over a man again.
"I'll be back soon. I have to finish a few chores," Sara said gently as she set Mila down on the floor, surrounding her with a few blocks to play with.
Mila absentmindedly began placing the shapes into the corresponding slots—a circle here, a triangle there. 'This is boring,' she thought, her mind far more advanced than her current activities. Despite her infant body, her thoughts and memories still carried the weight of an adult's perspective.
'Look at her!' The green orb exclaimed, its voice filled with excitement as it hovered nearby. Just watching Mila brought a small, emotional stir in its ethereal form.
'She's so tiny!' the blue orb added, marveling at Mila's small, human size compared to their original beast forms.
'She's growing up quickly too. It won't be long before we can meet her properly, though,' the snow-colored orb said, its tone filled with a quiet anticipation that left Mila feeling puzzled.
Mila's ears perked up at the sound of the three voices, and she glanced upward to see the orbs floating above her, their light softly illuminating the room. 'Why do they keep coming to me? What is their purpose?' she wondered, curiosity mixing with a hint of confusion.
"Who aw vu?" (Who are you?) she managed to ask, her limited vocabulary making the question simple but clear.
The orbs seemed momentarily taken aback by her attempt to communicate. 'At the moment, we cannot tell you,' the snow-colored orb responded, drifting closer to Mila as it spoke. 'In time, you'll understand.'
With that, the three orbs began to fade from sight, leaving Mila alone with her thoughts. As she watched them disappear, the door to her room slowly creaked open, revealing her father. A bright smile spread across Mila's face as she eagerly crawled toward him, her heart lifting at the sight.
"You look bored in here," Duke Reynard said as he scooped her up into his arms, his voice gentle. Mila felt a growing sense of comfort around him, a warmth she hadn't fully appreciated in her previous life. She realized how deeply she had misjudged both her father and her brother before. Now, she felt a deep connection she hadn't allowed herself to experience before.
"Let's go somewhere where you'll have more fun," he said, smiling down at her as he held her close. And for the first time in a long while, Mila felt a sense of peace, knowing she was truly loved and cared for.
They left her room, and as Mila was carried through the dimly lit hallway, she noticed that they were approaching a darkened room. Duke Reynard stepped forward, and with a graceful motion of his hand, flames leaped from his fingertips to the candles scattered around the room, illuminating it with a warm, gentle light.
As the room brightened, Mila's eyes widened in surprise. She heard the sound of clapping hands and cheerful singing, and when she looked around, she saw a small gathering of familiar faces around a table. There, in the center of the table, was a cake—her first birthday cake. Leo, Sara, and Trivett stood smiling, all there to celebrate this special day with her.
