ZH watched Mila as she sat beside Kate, gently stroking the aged beast's thinning fur. The cave was quiet, the air heavy with the unspoken reality that Kate's time was drawing near.

"So, how long do you plan on staying here?" ZH asked, his voice soft but carrying a hint of concern. He knew Mila's heart was set on being with Kate until the very end.

Mila didn't hesitate. "I want to be here for Kate until her last moments. It's important to me to create new memories with her, to hold onto them now and later when she's reborn." Mila leaned into Kate, hugging her tightly, determined to make every moment count. 'I won't let these memories be forgotten,' she vowed silently, her resolve firm.

Kate, sensing Mila's emotions, chuckled softly. 'You have a way with words, little one. It's very sweet. I can see why your father and older brother cherish you so much.' Mila giggled in response, nuzzling her face into Kate's neck, savoring the warmth and comfort that Kate provided.

ZH knew Mila well enough to understand that once she set her mind to something, there was no changing it. "Alright," he sighed, giving in. "I'm staying here with you all, then. But I'll go get some food. Don't even think about running away while I'm gone." He gave her a pointed look, knowing her tendency to act on her own whims.

"Okay!" Mila smiled brightly, grateful that ZH would allow her to stay with her dear friends for a little longer. 'He's always so worried about me as if I'm not capable of taking care of myself,' she thought, a mix of affection and exasperation in her heart. She knew he was being protective, but she couldn't help but feel a little stifled by it at times.

Over the next few days, Mila cherished the time she spent with Kate, Skye, Vivian, and ZH. They laughed, talked, and simply enjoyed each other's company. At night, Mila would sleep surrounded by her three loyal beasts, their warmth and presence providing her comfort. Meanwhile, ZH kept watch at the cave entrance, ever vigilant against the threat of Mana Hunters, who still prowled the forest.

One night, as ZH stood guard again, he felt Kate's presence beside him. The old beast moved quietly, her steps soft on the stone floor. 'You know, you don't have to do this every night.' Kate's voice was gentle, laced with concern. 'It's not good for you to be on alert all the time.'

ZH glanced at her, a bit taken aback. "That's strange... I don't recall ever being able to hear or speak with you without a contract." He found it odd, considering that he couldn't communicate with Cotton or Net in the same way.

Kate wasn't surprised by his observation. 'That's because you've made a contract with Mila. You can understand the beasts she's bonded with. It's a unique connection you have, while Mila, of course, can understand any beast, with or without a contract.' Kate's wisdom and understanding of these bonds impressed ZH, though he hid his surprise. Kate continued, her tone shifting to one of seriousness. 'You are special, ZH, and I know of your background. But it's not my place to tell her. She'll find out when the time is right, though not now.'

ZH's expression softened, acknowledging the truth in Kate's words. "I know she'll have to learn the truth eventually, but I'd prefer to wait until she's older, more ready to handle it." He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Your mana is weakening by the minute, Kate. I can sense it. Even the Mana Hunters wouldn't bother with your energy now; it's not enough to power a single stone. Tomorrow or the day after... those will likely be your final days."

Kate nodded, appreciating his honesty. 'You're quite accurate. I can see why she trusts you so deeply, not as a threat but as someone essential in her life. I'm glad she has someone like you on her side.'

ZH felt a pang in his chest at Kate's words, knowing how much Mila meant to him. "I'll do my best, Kate. She's... she's my bride, after all." A rare smile crossed his face as he glanced over at Mila, who was peacefully sleeping, unaware of the serious conversation happening nearby.
