The small, newly born fox looked up at Mila with wide, innocent eyes, its tiny body trembling slightly as it tried to make sense of its surroundings. 'My... name?' The little beast asked, its voice soft and unsure. It didn't yet understand its connection to the name it had heard from the young woman before it. Unbeknownst to the tiny fox, a bond had already been formed—a contract made long ago when it was still in the egg, thanks to the previous Kate.
Mila knelt down and gently scooped the little fox into her arms, holding it close to her chest. "Kate," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Your name is Kate." The warmth of the tiny fox snuggling against her brought tears to her eyes, and she hugged it even tighter. "My little Kate," she repeated, her heart swelling with love and relief.
As she held the newborn Kate, Mila couldn't help but think of the miracle that had just unfolded before her. 'So this is what they mean when they say the birth of a new life is a miracle,' she thought, her mind drifting back to her previous life. She remembered how others around her had celebrated the births of their children, calling it a miracle to have a child with the one they loved. Though many women she knew had shared the same man, she had always vowed never to share hers. The birth of this little beast felt similar, filling a void she hadn't realized was so deep.
Mila wondered if she would ever have children in this lifetime or if she would ever experience that particular kind of miracle. But even as she doubted, there was a small tug of hope in her heart, a glimmer of possibility.
As these thoughts swirled in her mind, Mila's vision began to blur. She felt her strength slipping away, her body swaying as she started to fall. Before she could hit the ground, ZH was at her side, catching her just in time. "Mila?! Mila?!" he called out, panic rising in his voice as he noticed the blood staining her leg. It must have been from a wound inflicted during her escape from the Mana Hunters.
Without hesitation, ZH carried her back to her room, his heart pounding with fear and worry. He immediately summoned the best doctors and healers, who rushed to treat her. They carefully bandaged her leg and worked to heal her, doing everything in their power to ensure she would recover.
Meanwhile, the newborn Kate, now just a baby beast with no memories of her past life, climbed onto the bed and curled up next to Mila. She didn't understand what was happening, only that the woman who had named her felt warm and safe. So, she stayed close, watching over her as she slept.
In the room, Skye and Vivian stood guard, their large forms casting protective shadows over the bed. Though they remained vigilant, their eyes were filled with a mix of worry and determination. They knew the danger wasn't entirely gone—the Mana Hunters could still be out there, waiting for another chance. But for now, their priority was Mila's safety.
As the night wore on, the room remained quiet, the only sound being the soft, steady breathing of the sleeping Mila and the occasional rustle of the wind outside. Kate stayed by Mila's side, her tiny body pressed against the girl she instinctively knew she was meant to protect. The bond between them, though still new, was strong, and Kate knew, in her simple way, that she would never leave Mila's side.
'We need to wait now,' Skye said, her voice carrying the weight of their situation. 'Things didn't go as planned, but Kate is here with us, and Mila needs time to recuperate.'
Vivian nodded, her gaze shifting between Skye and the tiny fox curled up beside Mila. She remained vigilant, ready to protect their master at any moment.
"I'll be back. I have some scores to settle with those bastards," ZH announced, his voice low and dangerous. As he left the room, a deadly aura surrounded him, so intense that every beast in the vicinity felt the chill of his killing intent.
