"This seems interesting," Mila muttered to herself as she stealthily followed the figures from a distance. Realizing the potential danger, she quickly sent Cotton to deliver a message to Emmett, requesting backup. Once she reached the building where the men had gathered, Mila slipped inside and hid in a closet, carefully observing the unfolding situation.
Inside the room, John Kinney, visibly tense, placed a suitcase on the table and opened it to reveal a collection of dazzling jewels. "Now, have you done your part of the deal? These jewels are a fair exchange, and I do not expect to be disappointed," he said, his voice steady but his eyes betraying his anxiety. The jewels were none other than the Mireraweth's Heart, a rare and powerful gem known only to be found by mages or sorcerers with exceptional mana. Mila's eyes widened in surprise, wondering how John Kinney had acquired such treasures.
The man on the other side of the deal eyed the jewels with greedy curiosity. "How did you get these?" he asked, clearly intrigued by the prospect of finding more for himself.
"These were given to me by a client in exchange for a fair amount. Please, will you finally leave my family alone?" John Kinney pleaded, his voice tinged with desperation as he looked at the men, who were now grinning wickedly at the sight of the jewels.
"Not yet," the man replied with a sinister smile that made the hairs on the back of John Kinney's neck stand up. "I've heard that your daughter is getting married soon to the first son of Reynard Noble. Why don't we come to an arrangement before her wedding?" His tone was laced with malevolence, and it was clear that his intentions were anything but honorable.
John Kinney's fear was palpable. "Tell me! Why are you doing this? I've brought the jewels you asked for!" His voice shook as he realized the situation was spiraling out of his control. "You said you would leave my family out of this!"
Mila, still hidden in the closet, began to piece together the truth. 'He's doing this to protect his daughter,' she thought, her heart heavy with empathy. 'How did it come to this?' Anger surged within her as she listened to the man's vile intentions. 'I can't forgive anyone who tries to exploit a woman's innocence before her wedding.'
"The deal is sealed, but we can't let you live now that you've seen what we're after," one of the men declared, drawing his sword. Mila knew it was time to act.
With a swift kick, she burst out of the closet, her dagger flying through the air and striking down several men in the room. She moved quickly, taking out the remaining men with precise kicks that sent them crashing into the walls. "Who are you?!" John Kinney exclaimed, grabbing the jewels and placing them back in the briefcase. He then instinctively hid behind Mila, despite her being smaller, recognizing her skill in combat.
"No time for questions. Let's go!" Mila ordered, grabbing John Kinney's arm and pulling him towards the window—their only escape route. Without hesitation, she smashed through the glass, dragging him with her as they leaped into the night. John Kinney screamed in terror, his cries piercing the air as they plummeted toward the ground.
"Skye," Mila called out calmly. In response, Skye appeared, her blade-like wings reflecting the moonlight as she soared beneath them, catching them just in time.
As they glided to safety, both Mila and John Kinney anxiously looked behind them, scanning for any signs of pursuit. "Why are you helping me?!" John Kinney shouted, still unsure if his rescuer had her own hidden agenda.
"You have a family, don't you?" Mila responded, her tone firm. When she mentioned the word "family," she saw him freeze, his eyes wide with realization. "Your family would be devastated if you died tonight."
"Is my daughter safe?!" he asked urgently, his voice trembling with fear. Mila recognized that look—it was the same one her father had when he was deeply worried about her.
