When I woke up the next morning, the bright sunshine of the Prison World seeped through a gap in the curtains, covering my face with a warmth that made my body tingle all over. Instinctively, I reached across the mattress searching for Kai, only to find his side of the bed completely empty.
A wave of panic flooded my veins and I sat up, scanning the room for any sign of him.
The house was silent, eerie. Empty.
Dragging myself out of bed, I glanced at the clock on the nightstand. Eleven in the morning. Where the hell was he?
Wherever he was, I'm sure he had good reason to leave without saying anything.
Forcing the 'what if's to the back of my mind, I got ready to start the day. After sleeping in later than usual, I was eager to make myself busy as soon as possible. I had a quick shower, brushed my teeth, then got dressed into a pair of jeans and white cami top.
Once ready, I made my way downstairs, hoping that maybe I had been wrong and that Kai was actually in the kitchen making pancakes for us. That hope diminished, however, when I entered his favourite place in the house, only to find it just as empty as my bed had been. Heaving a sigh, I turned and exited back through the door I'd just entered, deciding I'd eat when he got home.
I had planned to get out of the house today, to possibly take a walk somewhere to clear my mind of the events from yesterday - but with Kai not around and no idea of when he would return, I'd leave the walk until I knew he was safe. Accidentally reminding myself of the torture I'd been put through only 24 hours ago, I shuddered, pushing the memories into the 'for another day' folder of my brain.
Headed towards the lounge area, I decided I'd occupy myself with a movie until Kai came back. That was until I noticed the man stood waiting in the room for me, stopping me dead in my tracks.
His tall stature made my blood run cold, shiver slithering up my spine. He just watched me, unmoving, axe in hand. Dangerous smirk playing about his lips.
I looked over my shoulder, mentally noting all the escape routes in my house. However, as I turned back to see how close Joshua had gotten to me in the split second my focus had been elsewhere, the room had become empty once more.
Closing my eyes and shaking my head, I questioned whether I had finally gone insane. Seeing hallucinations of my torturer? Well, that was a new one. Silently praying Kai wouldn't be gone much longer, I spun on my heel to head back up to bed and get more rest. I clearly needed it.
As I turned, my face came into contact with something solid and I stumbled back a step, managing to right myself almost immediately after - Hybrid instincts and all that. I looked up into menacing dark eyes as he reached out to grip my shoulders.
"You're really here?" I gasped out.
"I'm really here," he confirmed. He let go of me, only to raise his hands and chant a spell in my direction.
