Kai's POV

It had been a week since the horror that took place in Portland. Mickie hadn't mentioned what happened since that evening in the bathtub, and I didn't push her into talking about it any further, worried what kind of reaction I could possibly trigger.

She didn't leave the apartment very often, if at all. I was mostly the one to get our groceries or walk Daisy. I think she was secretly scared of being ambushed any time she walked out of the door, and I couldn't be mad at her for that.

Behind the threshold of the barrier spell that I put in place every day before leaving was the safest place for her to be right now. Her loved ones had grown worried - none of them understanding what had turned her into such an agoraphobic all of a sudden - and called frequently to check on her.

I, of course, didn't return to Portland. Anna and I hadn't spoken since and although I should've checked how Max was doing after what he'd witnessed, I couldn't bring myself to find out. I didn't want to know just how badly I'd screwed up and destroyed any remnants of trust the kid had in anyone.

Even Daisy realised something was off with her usually-cheery mom. She stayed close to her as much as possible and spent most of the day curled on Mikaela's lap - to comfort herself or Mickie, I wasn't entirely sure. Either way, I was glad she was around to give her mom love when I couldn't be.

However, Mikaela had appeared to wake up in a different frame of mind this morning. As I stood at the stove making us some breakfast, she exited the bedroom wearing a silk robe and a smile.

"Good morning, my babies," she greeted Daisy and me.

Noticing her mom's change in mood, Daisy ran up to her excitedly with a wagging tail. Mickie picked her up and showered her in kisses, before making her way over to me, Daisy still in her arms.

"Good morning," I replied, my lips curling upwards in a reflection of my girlfriend's. "How are you feeling?"

Mickie kissed me softly. "Pretty good, actually," she admitted.

"I'm glad to hear," I replied truthfully. "Anything in particular that's brought this on?"

She shrugged, placing Daisy back onto the ground before sliding onto the barstool opposite me. "I'm not sure..." she murmured with a frown, before grinning at me. "I think I'm gonna go to the Boarding House today. I need to socialise again before I turn into a hermit."

I stirred the pan filled with scrambled eggs, keeping my focus on the spoon. "That's a great idea. I'm sure they're really missing you."

"Are you coming with me?" Mickie wondered softly, watching me cook.

Nodding, I placed the fried bacon onto each of our plates, followed swiftly by the eggs. "Once you step foot outside of this apartment, I'm not leaving your side." I flashed her a comforting smile. "You're safe with me."
