Kai's POV
Back in the comfort of my apartment, I let out a breath of relief as I took off my jacket and hung it up, mentally planning every step I needed to take in order to get out of this hell hole of a town whilst Daisy hurried to find her favourite toy.
First things first: accommodation.
Ignoring the red (50) next to her name, I quickly pulled up the number of the only person I trusted in Portland - other than my buddy Max, of course. It rang for a few seconds before someone appeared to answer - with nothing but silence.
I cleared my throat anxiously. "Hello?"
"So nice of you to let me know you're not dead," a voice replied, dripping with sarcasm.
"Things got... complicated," I explained, gulping thickly. "I didn't realise I'd worried you."
Anna let out a harsh laugh. "Oh, I'm sorry. Were the 50 missed calls not clear enough for you?"
Oops. "My bad."
She groaned. "Kai, I thought that call yesterday was your last goodbye."
"At the time, it was," I answered truthfully.
"What happened?" she asked, softening her tone.
I collapsed onto the couch, heaving a sigh of defeat. "Klaus happened," I told her simply. "He compelled Mikaela to turn her humanity off." Attempting to keep the wobble out of my voice, I said, "We're over."
It was quiet for a moment before Anna finally spoke again. "Oh... wow. I'm sorry to hear that, sweetheart."
"It's whatever." I really didn't want to get into this with my ex. "But, look, I need a favour."
"Sure, anything."
"I'm getting out of town for a while, and I think Portland needs to be my destination of choice. For the coven's sake," I explained.
"You're coming home?" she wondered, almost excitedly.
I flinched at the term 'home'. "Uh, yeah, I guess," I mumbled. "But I was hoping, if it's not too much trouble, that I could possibly stay with you? At least until I've got everything figured out."
Anna let out a gasp of delight. "Absolutely! You should know you're always welcome here."
"Thanks," I replied. "Oh, and I'll be bringing Daisy too if that's okay?"
"Of course!" she all but squeaked. "She'll love it here - there's so much open space, and I bet the kids will adore her!"
She was getting way ahead of herself, but I didn't have the heart to put a complete dampener on her mood. "It should only be temporary but I appreciate what you're doing for me."
