"No wonder I never found your car," I commented as Kai opened up the garage of the Boarding House.

Flashing me a grin, he climbed into the driver's side as I got into the passenger's seat. "Couldn't give away my hiding place too easily, could I?"

I sighed, clicking in my seat belt. "Did you really think I would just let you run away and not do everything in my power to try and find you?"

Kai chuckled and started up the engine. "No, not at all. But I was hoping that you would at least hate me for a while. At least that way you would stay safe."

I tutted. "Kai, I'm a Hybrid who hangs around with vampires, werewolves and witches. I have never been 'safe'."

He leaned his arm over the back of my seat and looked over his shoulder as he reversed out onto the driveway. Spinning the steering wheel in his palm, he put the car in drive and headed in the direction of my house.

"You don't know the Geminis like I do," was all he said.

"That may be so, but I can assure you Joshua Parker is not the worst threat me and my friends have faced," I said, watching his side profile as he clenched his jaw. "You seem to forget who I'm sired to."

Kai barked a laugh, eyes focused on the road ahead of him. "I didn't forget," he retorted.

Smirking slightly at his reaction, I turned to watch the world pass by out of the window, saying nothing. The tension lingered in the air for the rest of the drive, neither of us willing to break it with conversation. The fact that Kai didn't want to talk just proved the mood he was in - Kai always wanted to talk.

Pulling up outside the Lockwood Mansion, I got out of the car, Kai following suit. As he walked me to the front door, we still refused to speak, the events of the day hanging over us. I stepped through the threshold of my home, turning to look at Kai as he stopped in his tracks.

"Uh, thanks for the ride home," I said quietly, feeling a little awkward. "And for everything today."

The corners of Kai's lips picked up slightly. "No worries. If you're going to have a partner in crime, you should at least know what you're getting yourself into," he commented teasingly.

I chuckled softly. "You stabbed me the first day we met. I think I know what I'm getting myself into."

Kai grinned. "That's true." Then he sighed, glancing at his feet. "Well, I'm glad you're safe."

I smiled. "I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" I said, silently praying he wouldn't push me away again.

He bobbed his head once, turning to leave. "See you then."

I watched him walk away, slowly closing the door. Suddenly, he stopped in his tracks, spinning on his heel. "Mikaela, wait-"

Arching a brow, I looked at him expectantly. "Yeah?"
