"After the traffic lights, take a left."

Take a right! I tried to scream internally.

Turning the steering wheel, I took the left.

"Continue on route for two miles."

Go back!

My foot stayed on the gas.

Even though I knew this would be detrimental to mine and Kai's friendship, I couldn't stop myself. No matter how much I begged my own body to listen to reason, the bond was too strong.

"In twenty feet, take a right."

Go left! Go home!

Why was I so weak? Why couldn't I fight it? Did I not care about Kai enough to stop myself from breaking his heart?

Continuing to follow the route laid out for me on the GPS, I gripped the wheel tighter in my fists, clenching my teeth together as I fought with every fibre in my being to turn around. To crash the car. Anything to stop me from going through with Klaus' commands.

An image of an angelic smile materialised in my head. 'I'm so proud of you for helping me.'

I kept going.

A moment later, a new face appeared. 'Can't you see he's using you? He's got you right where he wants you.'

Kai's broken features almost made me slam on the brakes.

But I was nearly there.

Thirty feet.

Fight back, Kayla!

Twenty feet.

Think about Kai!

Ten feet.

I let out a roar of exhaustion before collapsing against the steering wheel, stopping the car at the side of the road.

"You have arrived at your destination."

"Shit," I breathed, forehead pressed against the cool plastic of the wheel.

You're so weak.

Dragging myself out of the car, I made my way towards the forest, checking the time on my phone screen. Ten more minutes before I had to kill. Again.

Taking a slow stroll up the hill through the dirt and trees, I felt the internal resistance try to pull me back to the car as if I was attached to an invisible rope. A resistance that sounded a lot like Kai.
