Mikaela's POV

I stood waiting outside the door expectantly as Kai walked into his new apartment.

He turned to look at me with a brow raised, before it seemed to sink in. "Oh, yeah. Sorry. You can come in."

"Thanks," I whispered. "So this is your apartment," I commented as I stepped through the threshold.

It was nice. Fairly modern, clean, spacious. I couldn't see Kai living in it for the rest of his life, but for now? It would do wonderfully.

"Yeah," Kai said with a small smile. "It's a little empty right now, but it's better than living in a hotel room."

I nodded. "It's cute."

He chuckled. "Thanks."

As he headed to the kitchen area, I stood aimlessly in the hallway, unsure where to place myself.

"You can sit down, you know," he teased.

Gulping, I made my way over to the leather sofa, perching myself on the edge. I didn't want to make myself look too comfortable here. This was a one-time thing only.

"Would you like a drink?" Kai asked, staring into the fridge.

"Just some water, please," I replied quietly. No more alcohol for me.

A minute or so later, he came to sit down on the sofa, handing me a glass of water.

"Thanks," I murmured, taking it from him.

"I've been thinking that I should probably put a spell on the door," Kai said suddenly, glancing over at it. "I know vampires won't be able to get through without being invited, but I don't want to take the risk, you know?"

"I don't think anyone will come here," I assured him, taking a sip from my glass.

Kai shrugged. "Doesn't hurt to be extra safe."

I sighed, holding out my hand. "Here."

He held it in his own eagerly, as I awaited the tell-tale sting of his siphoning. It came and went in only a few moments, before he exhaled in bliss, getting to his feet.

Stood in front of the main door, Kai held his hands out, palms facing the wood, and began to chant lowly under his breath, eyes closed.

A moment later, he turned back around with a grin. "All done. No one is getting in here tonight."

I let out a breath I hadn't realised I'd been holding. "Okay. That's good," I replied shakily.

Sitting next to me once more, Kai searched my eyes before lifting his hand, caressing my cheek with his thumb. "I won't let anything happen to you, Mickie."
