Mikaela's POV

I'd spent the night at the Lockwood Mansion, back in my own bed.

After leaving Kai's apartment before Matt came home - I didn't have the energy to grovel to yet another one of my friends that I'd hurt, and instead sent him a quick text to let him know my humanity was back on and that Daisy was safe with me, adding a quick, 'Sorry for everything that I did,' to sweeten the message - I'd returned to my own house, Daisy tagging along happily.

I was perfectly okay with Daisy sleeping on the bed with me, both of us desperate for some sense of comfort while our favourite guy wasn't around. I hadn't managed to get much sleep, given the circumstances - you know, weeks of brutally murdering people and losing the love of my life - but with Daisy next to me, I hadn't felt so lonely.

The next morning I scarfed down some breakfast and fed Daisy before taking her for a run through the woods behind the mansion. Once back, I had a shower and got dressed into some practical clothes - stretchy black jeans, a loose-fitting tee and my leather jacket over the top, a pair of combat boots on my feet.

Putting on a light amount of make-up and letting my hair dry in its natural wavy state, I was just about ready when I paused, stopping in front of the nightstand next to my bed.

Opening the drawer, I couldn't stop myself from reading my mother's will again, this time with all of my emotions intact. My chest ached longingly, wanting nothing more than for her to be with me, but knowing that wasn't possible, I considered the instructions she had left for me.

Was that something I was able to take on? Was I that type of person? I mean, sure, I was pretty good at organising and keeping control over situations, but in terms of a whole town? That was a big ask. I had always been the delinquent Lockwood, following too closely in my uncle's footsteps. The party girl, the one who could never do anything right.

Could Mikaela Lockwood really be trusted by - inspired by - all of Mystic Falls? Could she continue her family's legacy?

Shaking my head, I placed the will back inside the envelope and put it in the drawer again, ready to return to whenever the occasion arose. Instead, I picked up the second envelope containing the necklace and ring from Kai, a smile forming on my lips. Without hesitation, I slipped the ring onto my finger and clasped the chain together at the nape of my neck.

Feeling much more like myself, I turned to leave. However, I paused in my tracks as Kai's phone that I'd taken from his apartment and kept with me for safekeeping began to ring on top of the nightstand. Noticing the caller ID, every muscle in my body stiffened with shock, barely able to breathe for a few moments.
