Kai's POV

I'd tried looking for her everywhere. She was nowhere to be found.

I'd tried calling her hundreds of times. She'd left her phone in my hotel room.

For a while, I'd remained calm. She had probably needed some time to cool off, maybe to get some fresh air.

But after an hour or so went by, and there was still no sign of my favourite Hybrid, that's when the panic really began to set in.

What if she was in trouble? What if she was hurt or... worse? What if she'd done something that she would regret?

I wasn't going to find any of these answers by remaining a sitting duck in my room. I had to try and find her again. Grabbing my keycard and my phone - just incase, you never know - I hurried out of the hotel room and down to the first floor.

Before I had a chance to step foot into the lobby, I was met by a guy in uniform, stood in front of yellow tape, blocking my path.

"What are you doing out so late?" he asked, narrowing his eyes at me as he took in my character. A black band tee, ripped skinny jeans and a pair of biker boots? An outfit perfect for a criminal.

"Just getting some fresh air," I lied easily. "I'm a bit of a night owl and I'm having trouble sleeping." Okay, so that last part wasn't completely untrue. "What's going on, officer?"

"There's been an attack," he replied in a monotone voice. "We're not letting anyone leave until we've done a full investigation tonight. We'll also be questioning every guest in the morning so don't think about sneaking off anywhere. We've got the place surrounded by officers."

I gulped. "An attack? What kind of attack?"

"A murder of some kind," he said, still clearly uninterested in having this conversation with me. "Poor gal's been torn apart, limb from limb."

A girl? Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no.

"Do they know who the victim is yet, Sir?"

The officer shrugged. "One of the women from the front desk, we believe. Other colleagues have identified her remains."

Letting out a shaky breath in relief - hoping he didn't hear - I bobbed my head. I knew exactly who the culprit was. And now I also knew why she hadn't returned to the room.

If I knew Mikaela as well as I thought I did, then she'd made a run for the hills, with no chance of coming back.

And with the outside world completely off-limits until at least the next morning, there was nothing I could do except thank the cop, turn on my heel and head back to my room.

Crashing onto my bed, I'd just about managed to pull off my clothes before hitting the mattress, drained from exhaustion. Although my body craved it, I wasn't entirely sure sleep was on the cards for me tonight.
