Kai's POV
I flipped the page over.
'P.S. If you want to keep your loved ones safe, you'll do the right thing.'
"What's this?" I asked, voice trembling as I held up the small piece of paper. "Did Klaus send you this?"
Mikaela shook her head, handing me the envelope in which the message had appeared to arrive, the word 'Malachai' written on the front.
Oh. The message was for me.
"So my father wants a truce..."
"It's a trap, Kai!" Mikaela cried. "It has to be!"
I rolled my eyes. "Of course it's a trap, I'm not an idiot." Scrunching up the envelope and paper together into a ball, I tossed it into the trash. "But the warning is clear. If I don't do as he says, you'll be in danger."
"I'm in danger either way!" she replied, exasperated. "The risk of you getting hurt - or worse - is not worth calling his bluff."
Heading into the kitchen, I started opening drawers. "I have to go, Mickie. This may be my only chance to kill him whilst he's out of hiding."
She slammed her hands down on the counter opposite me, furious. "Are you really not even gonna give yourself a moment to think about this?"
"Already thought about it," I said with a shrug, scanning over my weapon options.
"And I can't convince you to stay?"
I shook my head. "Not one bit."
Mikaela heaved a sigh. "Fine."
Picking up a carving knife in its sheath and slipping it into the inside jacket of my pocket, I flashed her a grin. "Good."
She folded her arms across her chest."Then I'm coming with you."
My jaw almost hit the floor. "What? No, you're not!"
"Uh, yes I am," Mikaela replied stubbornly. "Come on, grab your keys and let's go." She began to head towards the front door.
I rushed over, stopping her in her tracks. "Hold on! The whole reason I'm going tonight is to keep you safe!" I hissed. "What would be the point in you walking straight into the lion's den with me?"
