Kai's POV
Power.
I'd never felt anything like it. Not only the unlimited source of magic but also the pure, raw strength running throughout my entire body. I felt like I could move mountains, could run a marathon without breaking a sweat.
Initially, all I wanted was blood. The hunger was almost insatiable; my gums ached, my throat burned in a way that I wasn't used to. Nothing else mattered in the world except sinking my teeth into the closest vein and draining it dry.
And that's exactly what I did.
My father had spent the past few hours dying very slowly and very painfully - but in a split second, I'd ended his life like it was nothing. I'd torn his jugular apart, ignoring his raspy pleas for help. I couldn't comprehend why he even bothered. Who was going to come to his rescue? He'd turned everyone in his life against him.
So Joshua died alone, killed by the son he hated the most. After every vile atrocity he'd committed during his life, it was what he deserved. And there wasn't a single ounce of guilt in my body as he finally took his last breath, his body falling slack under my hands.
Now that my thirst had been quenched, I could allow myself to take a moment to adjust to the change I had undergone. The sun hurt my eyes, but it was only slightly uncomfortable - nothing I couldn't get used to.
And then I picked up something I'd honestly forgotten all about until this very moment - my sisters on the front lawn, crying softly to themselves, their hearts racing with panic. I couldn't understand why they were so distraught. They knew what I'd come here to do. If they were so against me killing the disgusting man we called 'Dad', why trap him in the first place?
"Kai?.." a soft voice suddenly whispered from a few feet away. It was a voice I recognised instantly. Compassionate, loving, as smooth and delicate as velvet.
Mikaela.
My head snapped to look over at her immediately, terrified to see the fear in her eyes, the disappointment on her face when she realised the monster I had become.
But I was astounded to find nothing but adoration on her features when she gazed back at me. Her lips were curled into a smile, tears still resting on the rims of her lids from when she'd believed she'd lost me forever. Happiness radiated from her entire being - and relief.
Slightly embarrassed, I wiped the blood away from my lips, gulping down the rest of the liquid in my throat. "I'm sorry," I murmured. "I was just so-"
