Happy New Year Everyone!

Mikaela's POV

Skipping up to the rickety old house at the edge of town, I tapped my knuckles against the door, waiting patiently for an answer. When nothing happened, I tried again.

"Hey, Cait, are you here?" I called.

Nothing.

The lights were on. The cars were parked on the driveway. Someone had to be home.

Rolling my eyes, I said, "Girl, I know your uncle owns the house, I can't get in." Yanking on the handle, I pushed the door open, revealing an empty hallway. Faint sounds of crying echoed from a room far into the house.

"Hellooo?" Heaving a sigh, I leaned closer to the invisible wall, lifting my leg. "I need to be invited-" My foot fell through the open space with ease, no magical resistance trying to force me back out. "In..."

Immediately on the defence, I cautiously crept down the hall, scanning each room as I passed archways and doors. "Caitlyn?" Following the direction of the quiet sniffling, I stepped into the kitchen, searching for a source of the noise.

And there, crouched on the tiled floor over a corpse drained of blood, was Caitlyn.

"Stay away!" she hissed.

Ignoring her warning, I moved closer. "What happened?" Recognising the lifeless eyes of her uncle staring up at the ceiling with his throat torn out, I pieced everything together.

Caitlyn sobbed into her bloodstained hands. "He's dead," she whispered. "I killed him."

I took another step.

Whirling to face me, the vamp bared her fangs. Her cheeks were soaked from tears, her lips and chin covered in crimson liquid. "I can't stop killing people!" she wailed. "What's wrong with me?"

"Nothing is wrong with you," I shot back sternly. "This is who we are, Cait. We're predators, it's how we survive. This is only natural."

"Natural?!" she laughed incredulously. "I'm a monster."

Frowning, I pointed accusingly at the broken girl on the ground. "Hey! You're not a monster!" I snapped. "Honestly, I'm a little offended right now."

Caitlyn shook her head, hiding her face in her palms. "You've killed hundreds, Kayla. How do you cope?"

Snatching a clean dish towel from the countertop next to me, I knelt beside Caitlyn. "Simple. I don't let it get to me."
