Mikaela's POV

January 9th.

The day of the funeral.

It had been a week since Mom had died. I hadn't really given myself a chance to think about her passing since the night Tyler moved out, spending the whole time planning, organising and moving into Kai's apartment. Focusing all of my energy on staying busy, although stressful, was keeping dangerous thoughts out of my head.

I'd spoken to my brother every other day just to make sure he was still safe and in one piece. Each time he would try to convince me that he was fine, that he was having a lot of fun socialising with his friends again, feeling much more positive now that he was away from the painful environment of our family home.

But I knew him too well. I heard the slur of his words, the lack of focus when answering questions. Caroline had also informed me that he'd gotten into a few fights at college, his aggressive nature being much harder to control whilst intoxicated.

He didn't come to check on me. He didn't attempt to help with funeral arrangements. If not for me calling him, we wouldn't have spoken. He'd agreed to write Mom's eulogy, however, which was one less thing I had to worry about. For that, I was grateful.

Now, as I stood in front of the mirror in Kai's bedroom, I stared at my reflection: in a lace black dress, loose curls around my shoulders with the front strands pinned back, features incredibly solemn, no hint of a smile on my glossed lips. In only a week I had become almost completely unrecognisable, a ghost of the girl that was just so happy to be in love, surrounded by her family and friends. The girl that died along with her mother.

It was whilst I was loathing my appearance that my phone began to ring on the bed. Hurrying to pick it up in case there were any problems with the funeral, my stomach dropped when I saw the caller ID. My entire body froze in place, unable to move my fingers to answer the call. It stopped ringing for a few moments before his name flashed on my screen once again. Shoving my phone against my ear, I hit 'answer', murderous rage gripping me by the throat.

"Are you actually insane?" I hissed. "Calling me on the day of my mother's funeral? Either your brain has disintegrated or you have a death wish." I held onto the device tighter as I struggled to contain my fury. "What the hell do you want?"

"I apologise for that, I didn't realise it was today," an accent said through the speaker softly. "But I just wanted to tell you that I miss you, although I'm still hurt by your betrayal."

I barked a harsh laugh in disbelief. "And you chose today to tell me that? Klaus, you killed my mom! Any relationship between us is long gone."

"You don't mean that, surely?" he replied, having the audacity to actually sound hurt. "We had good times together, you and I. They must count for something?"

I made a noise of disgust in the back of my throat. He was delusional as well as crazy. "I hate you. I want nothing to do with you. Stay the hell away from me and never contact me ever again, do you understand?"
