Kai's POV

Three Days Ago

I'd arrived at Anna's in the early afternoon, getting a cab from the airport to the address she'd texted me. It was a small one-story home raised on foundations, quaint and simple, with a cottage vibe to it. The house was surrounded by fields, a few chicken coops, animal sheds and barns in the distance.

I strolled down the cobblestone path in the front garden, flowers and herbs surrounding either side of me; a typical witch's cottage. I felt an instant connection to the Earth the moment I stepped foot onto her land. Hurrying up the steps to her porch in case I'd been followed, I quickly knocked on the door, shifting my weight from foot to foot as I waited for Anna to answer.

Only a few moments later, the door opened, Anna stood with her arms folded across her chest, a brow raised expectantly.

I flashed a grin. "Hey."

She pointed accusingly in my direction. "You have got some serious explaining to do," she warned lowly, before stepping back and allowing me to pass the threshold.

Gripping the handle of my suitcase tighter, I slipped past her with a quiet, "Thank you," stopping near the entrance to take off my shoes.

Anna headed towards the kitchen area. "You can leave your things out in the hall if you like," she called over her shoulder. "Want anything to drink?"

Tugging off my coat, I hung it up then followed in the direction she'd disappeared. "You got any iced coffee?" I wondered, before sliding onto one of the barstools in front of the island in the middle of the kitchen.

"Who drinks coffee cold?" she teased, scrunching up her features with distaste.

My brows knitted together. "A lot of people."

She snorted sarcastically. "Sure thing."

Sighing longingly, missing home sooner than I'd anticipated, I said, "Just a water will be fine for me, thanks."

Anna bobbed her head once, turning to grab a glass out of one of the kitchen cabinets and filling it under the tap.

Movement in my peripheral vision caught my attention. Snapping my head in the direction of the small blur, I was pleasantly surprised to find a little black feline wandering in to greet the new visitor.

"You have a cat?" My lips spread into a grin as it meowed cutely at me before heading over to wrap itself around Anna's feet. "Could you be any more of a stereotype?" I teased.
