'You are the kindest thing that has ever happened to me, even if that is not how our tale is told.
When everyone else told me I was destined to be a forgotten nymph that nurtured flowers and turn meadows gold,
you saw that the ichor that resides in me demanded its own throne. You showed me
how a love like ours can turn even the darkest, coldest realm into the happiest of homes.'

January 16th.
The day before my birthday.
It had been an incredibly stressful few days leading up to now. Oh, I hadn't had to do a single thing, of course. As far as my friends were concerned, I wasn't allowed to lift a finger. But that's what made me so anxious.
I'd almost had to beg Kai that night he came home to get him to spill what everyone was keeping from me. Eventually, he gave in, getting out of bed to grab a small envelope hidden at the back of a kitchen cupboard that he knew I was too short to have reached. Wandering back to where I sat waiting impatiently on the bed, he handed it to me.
Opening the envelope in only a split second, I'd pulled out the piece of card inside, reading the inscription written in beautiful cursive.
'We are delighted to invite you to the birthday party of Mikaela Lockwood who turns 21 on Saturday. The event will be held on Friday 16th January at the Salvatore Boarding House, between the hours of 7 pm and 1 am. The theme is Greek Mythology. We expect you to dress accordingly. Gifts are highly appreciated. Alcohol and food will be provided to all guests. Feel free to bring a plus one. We're very excited to see you there. - Caroline Forbes and Elena Gilbert.'
I'd stared down at the card in my hand for a moment, letting the information sink in. "Is this an invitation... to my own birthday party?.."
Kai had chuckled. "Caroline goes to extremes, you know this. She wanted to keep it as much of a secret as possible."
All week I pestered him to let me go shopping for a costume, and every time he would swiftly change the subject. By Thursday, I was officially a nervous wreck.
"What the hell am I supposed to wear, Kai?" I'd cried as I glared at my severe lack of options hanging up in my side of the closet.
