(Kai is still baby-faced in my story currently, but we only saw facial-hair Kai in a suit so it's the only gif I could use)

Mikaela's POV
"You know what? Maybe this is a bad idea after all."
After spending ten minutes staring at my ballgown that was hung up ready to be worn later this evening, I'd already convinced myself not to go to the ball - and then changed my mind again - fifty times.
"If you don't show up then the rest of us are definitely going to be dinner for the Mikaelsons," Caroline's voice whined from the speaker of my cell phone on the bed.
I gulped. "But what if I'm putting all of you in danger anyways?"
"Klaus has been a threat on our lives for years, Kayla," Caroline said encouragingly. "This didn't start with you - but hopefully it will end with you. I want this war to be over."
I chuckled without humour. "You're telling me."
"Especially for you," she added. "You deserve to be happy."
I sighed. "Thanks, Care. You too." On the subject of her happiness, I couldn't stop the smile forming on my lips as I said the next words: "Is Stefan going to be your date tonight?"
Caroline giggled. "Not officially, but I picked a dress to match his mask, so I'm hoping we'll get closer at the ball. Maybe."
"I'm going to be the world's best wing-woman tonight," I teased. "It'll help distract me from my oncoming death."
My best friend tutted on the other side of the phone. "Kayla! Stop being so dramatic!"
I threw my head back with laughter. "Caroline Forbes tells me to stop being dramatic! That's headline news!"
"Oh shush," she snapped playfully. "I've got to go, I need to start getting ready, but I'll see you later at the Mikaelsons, right?"
Exhaling slowly, I nodded, almost as if trying to convince myself that everything would be okay. "Yeah, sure. I'll see you later, Care."
Not too long after ending the call with Caroline, I heard a knock on the front door. Before I had a chance to answer it, my mom was already there. I stood and watched from the top of the stairs.
"Oh, hello," she greeted the mystery man, before taking a package from him. "Thank you."
"Hey, wait!" I called down as she began to close the door. "Who's that for?"
