"Kai!" I shrieked, flashing to kneel at his side in a heartbeat. Swallowing down the nausea that had stirred in me at the sight of his corpse, I yanked the knife out of his chest and threw it to the side. Biting into my wrist, I then forced it against his lips, desperate for my blood to get into his system.
"Please, Kai. Drink." Begging was useless, his organs had already shut down to the point of no return. I knew my blood wasn't going to make a difference, but I couldn't just sit there and do nothing.
Cradling him up in my arms, I held his body against mine, tears streaming down my face. The pain I had felt this past week was nothing compared to the agony I was feeling right now. I know Kai had told me he'd tried to kill himself many times before, but to actually see it with my own eyes was another thing altogether.
"Please wake up," I whispered as I sobbed, resting my cheek against the top of his head. "Come back to me."
Three hours I sat on the floor with him, clutching his lifeless body against mine, refusing to let go. He couldn't die here, so he would come back to me eventually, right?
Right?
Finally, in an earth-shattering moment, Kai sucked in a gasp of air, blue eyes snapping open. He looked around frantically, confused as he tried to piece everything together. When his gaze landed on my face, he blinked rapidly.
"Mikaela?" he breathed, holding onto my arm for support.
I laughed, tears running down my cheeks now turning into ones of joy. "I'm here, it's okay. You're okay," I told him comfortingly, stroking his hair.
"What happened?" he questioned, sitting himself up.
As I turned to glance at the knife lying halfway across the room, he followed my line of sight, eyebrows almost touching his hair when he noticed the weapon covered in blood. "Oh," was all he said. His fingers instinctively stroked the freshly-healed skin of his chest where the knife had previously been. "I remember now."
"What the hell were you thinking?" I whispered, voice breaking from overwhelming emotion.
Kai shrugged. "Thought I'd give it another go. Wondered if Joshua had decided to finally let me die." He sighed. "Clearly not."
Shaking my head in disbelief, I swiped a hand down my face in frustration. "We will get out of here, Kai. It may not be right now but we will." Kai turned away and I reached out for his face, turning him back to look at me. "We'll defeat Joshua and Bonnie will bring us back home."
Kai scoffed, anger flashing across his features. "Don't you understand, Mikaela?" he yelled. "We can't defeat him! And I can't protect you, not without becoming-" He cut off, shutting his mouth before he could say any more.
